No way to distinguish Omicron cases from Delta, US doctors in a fix
#1
Information

Elaborating on the matter, a report by The New York Times states that the two antibody treatments that Delta-infected patients benefit from are the drugs made by Regeneron and Eli Lilly, while patients infected predominantly with the Omicron variant would greatly benefit from the antibody drugs manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology.

Now, the problem arises in the fact that there actually is no approved test to determine the coronavirus variant with which each individual is infected. Health authorities then use those “regional estimates” to decide which antibody treatments to use in clinics and hospitals.

According to infectious diseases experts and public health professionals quoted by NYT, the results of the genome sequencing used in most public laboratories take nearly a week to arrive – which is often too late to begin the early antibody treatments that have been found to reduce hospitalisations in patients.

“These tests don’t seem to work really well in the early parts of these infections because it doesn’t look like omicron has as high a viral load in the first couple of days, as opposed to delta, which had a screaming-high viral load on Day One,” he said. “What is shifting now is, when did you get tested? Because there now appears to be a lower amount of virus early on, that might explain why the antigen tests are not showing up positive until Day Three, when there’s lots of positivity.”

The virus is super active for the first 5 days. If the ART detects on the 3rd day, they still need to separate between Omicron and Delta.

Now, local clinical researchers, led by Associate Professor David Lye, a senior consultant at NCID, are planning trials of other drugs too.
