"Can you get compensation for the Optus outage?

It's too early to say for sure. Optus CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin apologised to customers and opened the door to some form of compensation.

"Now that the network is restored we will have a look at ways we can thank our customers for their patience and reward them for their loyalty," she told 9News.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland has indicated it could be on the cards for impacted customers – just not yet.

"In relation to customers who have been affected and what they recourse may be, I note the comments by the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) that at this time it probably too early to be discussing or giving definitive views about compensation or other consumer rights," she said.

"No reliable estimate on cost of Optus outage
Andrew McKellar heads the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), which represents businesses large and small.

"Optus has around 400,000 or more business customers, but the big impact here is going to be for those small businesses, many of whom are offline, there's going to be a major financial impact for many of them," he says.

No-one has been able to put a reliable guesstimate on how much the outage cost the Australian economy, but given the number of businesses affected, it will easily be in the tens of millions of dollars in lost sales and productivity."

How long has Optus been down?
Optus users began reporting outages at 4.05am on Wednesday morning.

Customers have been unable to make calls or access mobile data since then.

The shutdown is the longest, and largest in recent memory.

Speaking to 2GB at 12:30pm, Optus CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin said the company had "a path to restoring the whole network."
