Chee Soon Juan was recruited by the SDP in 1992. There was great public interest since it was the first time that an academic from NUS dared to stand against the ruling party in a GE. The Opposition in those days was made up of the hoi polloi which included taxi drivers, contractors, clerks and blue collar workers. Within months after Chee joined the SDP, he was dismissed from NUS by the Head of the Psychology Dept, Prof Vasoo, who was then a PAP MP, for allegedly using research funds to send his wife's doctoral thesis to the US. Chee denied the charges and claimed that his sacking was politically motivated.
