PAP Murali : Raising GST is true act of courage

Worse than punishing you is a punisher who thinks his act is noble....then you are really a goner.

Song Boh, you ask for it. Big Grin
“Rob” us nakedly still dare to put halo on their head. 一点羞耻心都没有。
The rich will not feel the pain after the increase, just like a mosquito bite.

For the poor, it will be like a Jelly fish bite after GST hike, high inflation price rise and new Carbon tax Implementation.

What courage? It's all because the pap has no balls to tax the rich ...who will dis loyally flee because they feel nothing for Singapore and are here for the tax haven.

The poor folks like us they can squeeze all they want and we have no where to run.

I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

The govt. had given money in advance to say that it is to offset the increased GST by 1 percentage point and another 1 percentage point the following year.  But things have increased many percentage, especially hawker food, from $3.00 to $3.50 and $4.00 to $4.50.  Looks like it is difficult to catch up with food prices..... crying crying

Very strange logic indeed. Raising GST is a courageous and compassionate act of the entrenched rulers. Better vote them out completely and quickly before this place becomes a nightmare. .... Rolleyes

Excellent points by WPs Dr Jamus Lim on how the proposed GST increase could still aggravate inflation significantly in this already high inflation environment in spite of measures to shield the low to middle income population, perhaps causing great hardship

And , of course, it seems completely unnecessary at the moment as we have a $30 bn structural fiscal surplus that we have not even begun to publicly delineate clear spending big plans for.

In addition, our reserves are growing very strongly at the rate of $50-$100 bn a year for the next 5-10 years because of our structural balance of payments surpluses and are thus likely to yield much higher NIRC revenues over the medium to longer term when such spending is most needed
There’s a fair chance that we might not need the GST increase at all !

All this is compared to the relatively modest $3.5 bn a year yielded by our proposed 2% GST increase.

So why raise the GST at this potentially most inappropriate and inopportune moment ?

The government has yet to make even a moderately convincing case for raising the GST near term either in parliament or out of it IMHO.

With the new policies to be implemented e.g. raise in GST by 2 percentage points, and other new taxes, the MIW are afraid that they may not get a good mandate, and the upcoming polls may see their votes fall from 61% to 51%.......... crying Thinking
