PM Lee:We can continue to welcome foreign workers and new immigrants

Singaporeans' anxieties over foreign work pass holders are being addressed, and the Government has to adjust its policies to manage the quality, numbers and concentrations of foreigners here, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

"If we do this well, we can continue to welcome foreign workers and new immigrants, as we must. Turning inwards is against our fundamental interests," he added in his televised National Day message on Sunday (Aug 8).

He said Singaporeans understand the need to welcome the talent and expertise that the economy requires to grow. These include work pass holders who contribute towards expanding the economy and creating more opportunities for Singapore.

"When we complement our own workforce with skills from around the world, more companies will invest here, and this then creates more jobs for Singaporeans," he explained. "This is a virtuous cycle."
PM Lee recognised the worries that Singaporeans have over competition for jobs, particularly when the number of foreign work pass holders is large.
The uncertainties brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic have also worsened these anxieties.

The same work pass holders who reinforce the team and contribute to the company may also compete directly with their local colleagues, PM Lee acknowledged in his address.

However, he cautioned against turning inwards, adding that such a shift would damage Singapore's standing as a global and regional hub, and cost its people jobs and opportunities.
"Most importantly, it goes against our values of openness, and of being accepting of others who are different from us," he added.
"We uphold these values, because they have anchored us, and helped us progress over the years as a nation."

"Sometimes, the locals feel unfairly treated, for instance, when they miss out on being hired or promoted," he added.
"Outside work, from time to time, there are also social frictions, because some work pass holders and their families have not fully adapted to our social norms, nor fully integrated into our society."
Said PM Lee: "I understand these anxieties and problems. The Government is addressing them."

So work pass holders are migrant workers or FTs?

After I respond to the wrong guess, will I be sued?

Foreign worker (cheap labor) and foreign 'talent' (ex labor) are different. SG welcomes TRUE talent that is able to transfer knowledge to our people and progress our nation. Not fake cert that sneak in the crack. Hope he meant what he said "The government is addressing them".

Conclusion is we need more foreigners to create jobs here as the govt has not found other sufficiently good ways to create jobs for Singaporeans.

You can accept this conclusion or don't accept.

There is no ways to control it. Is becos MOM is too complacent and lapse in many ways in their regulatory measures, checks and responsibilities. Lacks of due diligence and hard efforts in their roles.

Then these people are Real Talents and earning more than $100k per mth that can lead the company so that we can learn from him.

Good to see the 100k Fake Talents go back ie like my ex- IT, Network . .  Consultants, my friend's workplace insurance settlement surveyors, those supply chain managers, HR Directors,  CFOs  . . . . .

Otherwise, how to build the Singapore Core that PAP talked about for past 6 years where Lim SS mentioned 2:1 ratio? 2 Citizens : 1 Foreigner ( at 3 levels from FWs, FTs and workplace ratio for meaningful reports) where MOM policies must be revampled.

It started by former PM Goh when asked about foreign talent he tongue twisted that without foreign workers our flats will not be built. Them lump foreign talent and foreign workers together how to trust them. Since then , the local content in the employment industry has drastically eroded. Ever since it got more unpopular there was a quick lane to zap in more foreign talent some with faked degrees, grant them PR status super fast (wait around 1 year) and then on getting a pink NRIC is no issue. Last election surely can see data of the number of new citizens.

We past the stage where we will believe what govt say at face value. Show us the 'money'. If there is a genuine change, people will be able to feel and see the change.

1. I have served the nation in a combat unit for 2.5 + 10 years. I had fulfilled my duty as a citizen, but has the country do it's part for me?
2. I don't know where the threat of CCP is, but I know the threat of CECA is already at my doorsteps
3. I had been called a CCP, JHK, Pinoy, but they never called me a CECA..

If PM is very serious to lower foreign content he has placed the wrong guy in charge of our education. Our education system is slow to make our students be relevant for the employment sector. Moving forward everything will be digital, AI, etc schools must get such syllabus into their timetable.

Are "being addressed"?

Since when?

At the same time, "SG must not look inward."

Singstats. Number of Foreigners= 2,162,600

MOM. Number of work pass holders= 1,231,500 ( including maids)

-------------------------------------------------------------
 left with 931, 500??

I believe this is the data that ICA did not provide for Foreign Spouses and their children etc

Do we need so many Dependents that cannot contribute to our society and economy? If FTs are earning less than $15k per mth and not real talents like Ramesh, why allow their Dependents here?

Actually, the dependents also contribute to the economy when they eat and buy things. Just that they do not contribute in a big way that's all.

But, how many of these CECA spouses eat at our hawker centers or shop in  Giordano?  Their contributions is negligible.

My CECA colleagues said their biggest expense is India International School tuition fees and S$2500- S$3,500 of banking loans to build a house in India every mth.

Even if they don't eat at hawker centre, they also need to buy groceries locally. Like I said they contributed but not in a big way.

Prior to this may, the dependents also can work in Singapore. So yes, they contributed by taking Singapore an jobs.
