Similar situation in 1936 when there was a debate whether to send athletes to attend the Berlin Summer Olympics. There were 2 opposite groups; the pro and anti. Finally, the pro won and the US sent a 359 member team to participate. There were no talks about diplomatic boycotts.

This time, there were no debates. The US allowed the teams to go but imposed diplomatic boycotts instead.

Which I guessed is better than the boycott back in 1980. USSR retaliated in 1984 with another boycott.

Not a good thing to start a boycott trend for sports, politicising it. Thankfully it ended in 1984.
