I had more luck keeping guppies and tetras together since they’re peaceful. I avoid mixing aggressive ones like cichlids unless I’ve got a big tank with lots of hiding spots.

I had similar issues before and adding more plants helped a lot. I used
java fern since it's easy to grow and doesn’t need much light or CO2. It also provides good cover for shy fish and helps keep the water clean. Mine attached easily to driftwood, and the fish seem to love hiding under the leaves. It's been growing well without too much care.
