Bloomberg's sources estimate that in this case the million dollar question is "whether the US and its European allies could be embroiled in a new war to defend the small Baltic states, once part of the Soviet Union and now they are members of the EU and NATO".

"With Russian forces potentially much closer to the borders of Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, and Crimea remaining the Kremlin's crown jewel in the Black Sea, the US should make significant investments in its European allies to maintain their influence," the Institute for the Study of War said in a report released last week.

That could force the White House to choose between maintaining adequate forces in Asia to defend Taiwan against a possible strike from China or preventing a Russian attack on NATO.

"The whole undertaking will cost a fortune," analysts led by Frederick W. Kagan said in the report. "And the cost will last as long as the Russian threat continues, possibly indefinitely," he concludes.
