SINGAPORE - More than 1,900 faculty members and staff at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have donated a record $13.68 million worth of unused leave to student aid and school advancement.

This marks an increase of more than 33 per cent from last year's donation of $10.25 million.

NTU employees gave a total of 27,593 days of unused leave this year, up from 20,145 days last year, according to a statement by the university on Tuesday (Nov 23).

This is the second year that NTU's Leave Redemption and Donation Exercise has taken place. It began last year to allow employees to give their unused vacation leave to an NTU fund of their choice.

It actually reflects very badly on NTU's working culture that their employees cannot not fully consume their leave and the situation actually deteriorated by 33%. Self-pwn by NTU.

I thought so too initially. But I think some as stated in the report really enjoyed their job and thus never took leave. It's the same for me.

Back when I was working for UK and US MNCs, I never took much leave and it never bothered me as I really enjoyed my job.

Judging from what I know about NTU's culture, the real reason is probably not that the workers love their job, but because many supervisors refuse to approve the leave applications (or at least frown on employees taking leave). Especially those research/academic staff on contract (very common) who don't want to jeopardise their contract renewals.
