The good news is unlike NATO, the Commonwealth isn't a military club...and nor does it need to make new enemies for justify its existence. 

That is why when PM Lee saw how NATO expanded and yet War still happen in Europe...So he decided it is best in SG's interest to follow the peaceful rise path as Asia Pac had been for last 4 decades...instead of following NATO's way of expansion and WAR making.

Since the fall of USSR,  Asia Pacific grew and prospered in peace and cooperation, Europe choose a different path of expansionism.

Actually, we are already in WW3 - just in a very different manner from how the last two WWs were waged.

For e.g. after 4 months Ukraine conflict, the fighting has not spread beyond the European theater, unlike WW2 which were triggered by full scale outbreak of war in Europe and Asia Pac after surprised attacks on Poland by Germany and Jap strikes on Pearl Harbor and invasion of rest of Asia in 1940s.

NATO so far has not declare war against Russia nor are they capable of projecting power to Asia since Asia today is no longer as weak when much of the region was colonised by the West. What is interesting in 21st century all those "observers" at NATO meetings  - SK, Jap, NZ and AU, like most of NATO members, are basically vassal states of America...

The last thing the Chinese want is war returning to the Korean Peninsular.

Only US and Jap will welcome that since it means drawing China into a conflict while Japan has excuse to ditch their "Pacifist" Constitution that was forced on them by the Americans after WW2 defeat.

The biggest problem for SG is we already knew we don't live in a "friendly" neighborhood since 1965.

So your question about defending against "chicken attacks" or lights going off or Water-supply got turned off...are nothing new.

Perhaps it is time for some of us to GROW UP and understand NATO or not, deterrence is only as good as not selling your interest for someone else game, resourcefulness and being street smart when comes to dealing with powerful countries.
