Singapore’s Foreign Minister and its High Commissioner to Malaysia on Thursday (June 8) apologised to Malaysians for the “gratuitously offensive comments” made by Singapore-born stand-up comedian Jocelyn Chia about the country, including missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

In a tweet on Thursday morning, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan said that he was “appalled” by Ms Chia’s “horrendous” statements.

Although she is no longer a Singaporean, her crass joke may send the wrong impression around the world that we are snobs and that we lack human kindness after we've become wealthy.

Singapore is the place where she received her education. She can go become an American, Mexican, French, Indian, Chinese anything by renouncing her Singapore citizenship, but she will be judged by what she says which people assume is learned from Singapore.
