SINGAPORE - The first inspector-general in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will take on a new role to oversee the pre-school sector from Dec 15.

Mr Tan Chee Wee, 47, will be appointed chief executive of the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA). He was appointed CEO-designate on Sept 1, ECDA said on Thursday (Sept 16).

He will replace current CEO Jamie Ang, 44, who has been heading ECDA since Oct 1, 2019. Ms Ang's term ends on Dec 14.

Mr Tan, who held the rank of brigadier-general in the SAF, established the Inspector-General's Office to strengthen safety governance and management systems in SAF in his role as inspector-general.

The role was introduced in Feb 2019 as part of measures to improve safety following a spate of military fatalities.

Mr Tan had concurrently served as the SAF Chief of Staff - Joint Staff. In this role, he drove efforts to develop the blueprint for the next-generation SAF in the areas of warfighting concepts and organisation structures, said ECDA.

He has also held a range of senior appointments in the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) and the SAF. These include director of joint operations, commander of air defence and operations command, director of the policy office, and defence attache in Washington.

He joined the SAF in 1993 as an air traffic controller in the Republic of Singapore Air Force.

Another clown . . . or another Army General demoted to be a soldier?

What does he know about Early Childhood Development? Such a waste of money to train him for 5 years in his job.

These appointments are making a mockery of meritocracy. Those with many years of early childhood education management experience and knowledge are being sidelined by a boss with zero relevant experience.

Isn't it nice to know that even our little ones are well looked after by such a ranking officer of the highest quality just like NOL and SPH?

Moral of the story. Your child career dream should be be a general. Prospect brighter than banker.

General can be director in TH, CEO in GLC and Early Childhood Development Agency and best of all MP.

1. I have served the nation in a combat unit for 2.5 + 10 years. I had fulfilled my duty as a citizen, but has the country do it's part for me?
2. I don't know where the threat of CCP is, but I know the threat of CECA is already at my doorsteps
3. I had been called a CCP, JHK, Pinoy, but they never called me a CECA..

Job Description for this role includes this 1 line-
An early childhood program manager oversees social, academic and emotional development of the youngest students.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does he have a degree in education, psychology . . .. ? And how many years?

What skills does he have to fit this job? Communication skills in the army is not relevant.

Anyone can strenghten the safety governance and Management systems which is nothing special nor difficult.

Many private sector employees have done it as Mgrs/ Directors as part of Quality and Compliance.

This is not a valid point to transfer an ordinary Jack to oversee Pre- School sector.

I think this decision has made the Govt look like trash.

Win the World but lost your Soul.
