Profit drop because they spend as much as possible on expansion. Now is not the time to worry ant profits. They are onshoring as much chip making as possible so as to not depend on other countries.

SMIC needs to grow to ten times it's current size to fulfil China chip demands.

The lower profit has nothing to do with plant expansion. The cost of expansion r usually accounted as capital investment and not included in the profit and loss calculation. The cost increase could b due to other factors.
