Scotland’s pioneering policy of minimum pricing for alcohol has been linked to a 13% drop in the number of deaths from alcohol consumption, and hundreds fewer hospitalisations, according to a study.

In May 2018, the Scottish government introduced legislation implementing a minimum price of 50p a unit of alcohol. The research published in the Lancet suggests it has been associated with about 150 fewer deaths a year on average.

There was also a 4.1% reduction in hospitalisations for conditions wholly attributable to alcohol consumption, equivalent to avoiding 411 hospitalisations a year on average.
