S'pore’s factory output turns negative with 3.9% fall in June, dragged down by electronics, biomedical sectors worse than economists’ forecast of a median 0.1 contraction. Factory output fell 3.9% year on year in June, reversing May’s revised 2.3% growth, EDB data on Friday (Jul 26).J une’s performance was worse than private sector forecasts, economists predicted a median 0.1 contraction in a Bloomberg poll.
Excluded volatile biomedical sector, output declined 1.6% y-on-y in June, reversing from the 9.5% growth in May factory output in key electronics sector slid 5.5% from the yr-ago period in June, reversing May’s 18.6% yr-on-yr growth, this was despite all segments recording gains except semiconductors, which declined by 9.4%. Moody’s Analytics economist Denise Cheok said electronics production in South-east Asia has lagged recovery in North-east Asia “owing to its place in global value chains”. Demand for high-end chips produced in South Korea and Taiwan has surged due to advances in artificial intelligence, she said.
Cheok added: “Momentum been slow to trickle into lower-end chips used in consumer electronics & cars produced in S'pore & other parts of the region.” DBS economist Chua Han Teng said: “S'pore’s manufacturing performance was choppy in Q2 2024, we remain hopeful for a gradual fragile recovery in 2024.” He attributed June’s weak reading to sharp pullback in the electronics sector, adding cluster’s performance will be crucial to Spore’s factory output recovery this year.
Interior of the new Leica Microsystems S'pore manufacturing facility at 15 Tukang Innovation Drive. S'pore’s factory output beats forecast with 2.9% rise in May “External demand for electronics products remains resilient, as evidenced by the continuous gains in S'pore’s electronics purchasing mgrs’ index sub-indices, such as new orders, new export orders & backlog orders, as (at) June 2024,” he said.
Chemicals 5.9% & General manufacturing 1.6%.
He expects S'pore’s electronics output to benefit from the global tech upcycle, underpinned by the replacement of smartphones and PCs, as well as the expanded use of artificial intelligence applications. Biomedical manufacturing was the worst-performing cluster for the month. Output contracted 23.2% year on year in June, although the decline slowed from May’s 43% slide.
This largely driven by pharmaceuticals segment, which contracted 47.1% on account of a different mix of active pharmaceutical ingredients being produced compared to a year ago. In contrast, medical technology segment rose 11.4% supported by export demand for medical devices.
Precision engineering also declined 3.2% year on year in June. Machinery and systems segment contracted 4.4%, led by lower production of back-end semiconductor equipment & process control equipment, while, precision modules components segment decreased 0.8%, due to lower output of dies, moulds, tools, jigs & fixtures. Conversely, transport engineering remained a bright spot, with output rising 10.3% yr on yr in June. The marine and offshore engineering segment expanded by 19.5%, supported by a higher level of activity in shipyards as well as increased production in oil and gas field equipment. The aerospace segment grew 12.4% spurred on by higher production of aircraft parts & more maintenance, repair and overhaul jobs from commercial airlines.
However, Cheok expects growth in the sector to moderate in the second half of the year “as travel-related demand normalises to pre-pandemic levels”. Production in the remaining clusters grew on the year. On seasonally mth-ly basis, manufacturing output slid 3.8% in June, reversing May’s revised 0.5% expansion. Excluded biomedical manufacturing, production fell 6.4% on month, seasonally adjusted, reversing the7.1% growth recorded in the previous month.

Seatrium shares surge over 9% after company flags swing to first-half net profit. Group will be releasing its first-half results on Aug 2 be4 trading hours. In July, Seatrium chief executive officer Chris Ong told The Straits Times that the company is turning around. It had grown its net order book to about $26 billion, with orders from the world’s largest oil and gas and renewable players, he said.
He noted that Seatrium is also no longer a single product company, as it now operates across a spectrum of energy-related services. These range from the construction and installation of offshore wind substations and turbines and electric offshore transmission systems, to the construction of floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, ship construction, repairs, and more.
July, Seatrium secured $180 million worth of contracts to repair, upgrade various kinds of vessels. All projects, except one, will be completed by end of 2024. Contracts include major repairs on offshore vessels, naval vessels, ferries, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, and tankers, as well as damage repair..
Seatrium has been winning global offshore wind projects. In Britain, it is working on a 1.4GW high voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore converter platform for Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, which will help to transmit offshore wind power to the mainland power grid. Company is also working on projects in Taiwan, the German and Dutch North Sea, and the United States, among others.
