With the away-goals rule not applicable in the competition, Tsutomu Ogura’s team faces a straightforward yet daunting task: winning outright on aggregate to advance. Even a 3-1 win in normal time would only force the match into extra-time.

PHU THO – The S'pore footballers arrived in Vietnam aware of their mission: Strike early to silence the vociferous home crowd in a bid to claw back the 2-0 semi-final, first-leg deficit at the Asean Championship.A nd while the Lions were able to find the net as early as the 10th minute, it was contentiously ruled out in the first sign of what would ultimately be a night of frustration as the Lions’ comeback mission unravelled at the Viet Tri Stadium in the Phu Tho province. On Dec 29, it was Vietnam, backed by a raucous sea of 15,284 supporters, who emerged 3-1 victors for a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Lions captain Hariss Harun, who collected his 138th cap, was downcast after the final whistle as he trudged to the team bus with his teammates.

When asked about Faris Ramli’s disallowed goal, the 34-year-old shrugged his shoulders and said: “it is what it is.”

He added: “When we saw the ball hit the net, we were all given an extra boost. We wanted to get the ball and start again, but then there was a long wait. UPDATED Dec 30, 2024

So it was tough.

“It’s always tough to come here to play. I think we threw everything that we possibly could.
“Sometimes these things happen in football, we have to deal with it. We have to accept it and move on.” Despite the setback, Singapore coach Tsutomu Ogura was pleased with the gutsy display.

“Today our players... showed that (they can) play our football. I’m very proud of our players, that they are improving more and more, game by game,” he said. “Today they were not scared, not afraid to play against the Vietnam national team. They (the Vietnamese side) are a good team, but we still kept fighting and showed the fighting spirit.”
The Lions had started the match like men on a mission despite the chilly, 16 deg C temperature at kick-off, unsettling the hosts with aggressive pressing in the opening exchanges.

And it seemed to have paid off when Faris’ header was helped into the net by Vietnam defender Bui Tien Dung, only for referee Lutfullin Rustam to rule it out. The Uzbekistan official had gone to the pitch-side monitor during the video assistant referee (VAR) review and after a seven-minute wait, he confirmed the decision, much to the dismay of the Singaporeans. Replays did not make it clear if there was a clear infringement.

The 2024 ASEAN Championship is writing a script that no one predicted from the beginning. With contenders Malaysia and Indonesia knocked out from the group stage, Singapore and Philippines joined top-seeded Việt Nam and Thailand as the region's best four teams, and the results in the first leg showed that they were no pushover.

Let's go over Singapore first, who held Việt Nam to a standstill until the final minutes of added time.
Their coach, Tsutomu Ogura, did what he promised before the match: creating difficulties for the on-form rising star Nguyễn Xuân Son, who was menacing against Myanmar.

Stats-wise, Singapore held on to 67 per cent of possession in the first leg match at Jalan Besar, and had double the amount of passes made, with a whopping 80 per cent pass completion rate.
ViệtNam had most of their passes against Myanmar at home and also in Singapore launched towards Xuân Son, whose athletic ability made him suited to catch onto those passes where defenders could not reach.

Singapore's plan was then simple: keep the ball on the ground, keep possession, and stop long balls from reaching the tall striker. The plan was executed well, with Singapore even having dangerous chances in the latter part of the second half. Mentality and focus were what hindered the Lions from securing a draw at home, a problem that has surfaced since the 2-4 loss against Thailand in the group stage, a match where they led 2-0 against the giant and could have gotten away with a victory.

A clumsy last-minute penalty and an ignorant defensive mistake made the task for Singapore in the second leg way more difficult, a task that The Straits Times' Deepanraj Ganesan compared to "climbing the mountain ranges of Xuân Sơn National Park in Phú Thọ".

Thailand's match against S'pore is perhaps this tournament's best match & also a principal talking point in this article. The Thais almost lost control of the game & the entire match after going down 0-2 in the opening minutes. Rotfl
