So what's new? Iswaran's case shows the close relationship that our politicians enjoy with our captains of industry - including many who are their former classmates, friends and of course, family members.

S'pore has consistently been placed 4th in the World Cronyism Index, so it doesn't surprise me that we have climbed those rankings which come from The Economist, Forbes and IMF.

The Economist's measurement of crony capitalism is a joke. They just label entire sectors as crony sectors. Really crazy.
I think quite a few articles have written about this particular useless measurement from The Economist.
OK, found one: https://www.academia.sg/academic-views/s...e%20below).

Some of the countries' ranking are lower due to the following:
The index has been criticized as being a misnomer, as it does not actually calculate the full situation as to what constitutes as crony capitalism, by leaving out crucial sectors or situations such as South Korea's chaebols, Japan's zaibatsu, or lobbying by American companies to the United States Congress such as Google, Facebook and Apple in return for favorable policies and tax schemes, among others.

The method of defining cronyism is not entirely logical but there is some basis. For example, have you wondered why the property developers got an extension to the absd deadline?

Dont make me laugh when the team speaks about meritocracy.
