'Out of his depth': Nishigaya failed to convince as Singapore football head coach, say observers

The language barrier — Nishigaya could not speak fluent English and relied heavily on assistant coach Koichiro Iizuka as a translator — was a big impediment as he often struggled to get his points across to players and build meaningful relationships with them.

Many previously successful coaches were found wanting when big money was no longer available. National coaches don't have the luxury to buy themselves out of trouble.

Malaysia has improved by leaps and bounds after recruiting 19 foreigners with parental links to the country or who played in the Malaysian Super League for at least 5 years. These naturalised Malaysians have done their adopted country proud! Their recent 3-3 draw with mighty South Korea proves the effectiveness of recruiting FTs.

The irony is that Dominic Tan, who is regularly called up for the Malaysian National Football Team was born and raised in Bishan and was eligible to play for S'pore, decided to represent his parents' country.  How could the FAS miss this genuine local talent?
