I am going to repeat one suggestion I gave decades ago... Food for thought and it applies not only to hawker food.

To balance out inequality and ensure that resources are less skewed to further deepen the divide in society, all good and services should not be in absolute price but based on a percentage of one's income/net worth. So if we price fish all noodles at 4 bucks for a median salaried person/household, the equivalent price would be 8 bucks for a person/household that is earning twice or with a net worth twice of that median income family.

Food for thought.

Are the hawkers supposed to do the means testing? LOL!

Govt should lower and standardize their rentals and go by balloting instead.

Now the current practice of stalls and shops going to the highest bidder. It is the high rentals that are killing the tenants and us Smile

The Govt should regulate rentals at hawker centres so that food continues to be more affordable to the masses. Coffee shops, food courts, cafes and restaurants will be priced differently. Once more diners migrate to the rent-controlled hawker centres, the rest will have to lower their prices to more reasonable levels.

Malay nasi padang is priced high because these stallholders do not enjoy the same economies of scale as Chinese hawkers who cater to a far larger group of diners.

Obviously Rental DO PLAY A PART. This Amy Koh is really BS to max claim not due to high rental.

One thing is Govt cannot so call " control the Private landlord come coffeeshop rental " Just like those HDB flat at resale markets.

Seller want to sell high , and there are willing buyers pay high selling price.

But EPIC come NTUC control one they reduce rental now back to Amy Koh claim which she claim high rental don't affect hawker foods price.

Than WHY NTUC don't charge so high leh? Obviously High rental will in return consumers have to extra more for their hawker foods Not just due to ingrendients now cost a lot. Hawkers can always scout the cheapest suppliers. So many Suppliers out there obviously in nature there is competition , which supplier offer the best deal yet quality is good obviously more hawkers will get orders from them.

Now on hawker side they also need to earn and profit. Obviously Coffeeshop high rental will have to make them sell more expensive beside pay off the high rental fee also the hawkers need to profit themselves or else why come out work as hawker obviously need to profit.

How much they wanna profit again " subjective " from individual hawkers. Some hawkers just like greedy landlord will mark up double obviously whereas some hawkers not say greedy as long the profits is there good will not mark up so much on their hawker foods beside pay off the high rental.

Last time moi hawker relatives that sell $1.20 bak chow mee or $1.20 cheekon rice or 10c grassjelly water ish able to earn until drive big car and live big attach house. Many managed to move out of their HDB around Sin ming area to those attach houses along Thomson road before they even hit 40 yro.

But nao they all said it ish impossible to achieve the same in modern Sinkapore, cause the rental ish no longer dirt cheap like they used to enjoy 40~50yrs ago. Sad

There was a time when the country asked ordinary men to do extraordinary things.

But now, they'll only do it for money.

Because last time property price still so call " reasonable " even come landed house , condo. Unlike now in total mess High and Highers.

So if one need to chase his/her dream wanna own it obviously you need to work double hard , and as Seller , hawker obviously you need to mark up the selling price MORE to earn MORE thus you can able to afford buy current private properties at that HIGH price.

It is difficult to judge a book by its cover. Many old uncles dressed in T-shirt, shorts and slippers leave the hawker centre in their Mercedes, BMW, Lexus etc. after eating,
