Sichuan (originated here during the 3 Kingdoms period), Yunnan and quite a lot of southern Chinese cities release sky lanterns in certain places. But a lot of other places banned it due to fire mishaps.

Taiwan and Japan started doing the same during Qing dynasty. In Taiwan, the lantern release became commercialized in the 1990s. In fact, sky lanterns are released every night in certain places in Taiwan.

Sky lanterns are also released in Thailand, Mexico, Poland and Russia. In Mexico, the paper to make the sky lanterns is called "Papel de China" and the act of releasing sky lanterns came to Mexico via Spain which learnt the practice from China.
