Ukraine Formed A Powerful New Brigade. One Problem—It May Be Missing Drones. The 155th Mechanized Brigade has Leopard 2 tanks, Caesar howitzers. Now it needs drones & drone jammers. Ukrainian newest brigades has arrived in Ukraine after nearly 3-mths training in Poland & France. 155th Mechanized Brigade is arguably best & certainly most heavily-armed—of dozen or so new brigades, Ukrainian forces have formed in recent mths, doesn’t mean 155th Mechanized Brigade is ready for combat. It may be missing critical equipment.
Expansion following Russia’s wider invasion of Ukraine in Feb 2022, Ukrainian ground forces, army, air assault forces, marine corps, national guard & territorials—could deploy a hundred brigades, each w/around 2,000 people. One of biggest forces in world but wasn’t enough. Out numbered, out gunned & overstretched along the 800-mile frontline, even best Ukrainian brigades never got a chance to disengage for rest. The elite 47th Mechanized Brigade, main user of US-made armored vehicles, was in bloody combat for 15-mths be4 finally rotated off frontline, even this break came to an abrupt end with invasion of Kursk Oblast in western Russia drew the brigade back into action.
Meanwhile, in eastern Ukraine’s southern Donetsk Oblast, 72nd Mechanized Brigade spent 2-years defending fortress town of Vuhledar. Ground down desperate for relief never arrived, the brigade finally retreated in September, surrendering a key sector to the attacking Russians. Ukraine’s war-weary brigades need help. 4 new army brigades formed in late 2023 offered only partial relief. It

Russians ‘Panic’ As Ukrainian Forces Fling 40 Cruise Missiles, Ballistic Missiles And Drones At Targets In Crimea. The Nov. 27 raid may have been a powerful and elaborate diversion. In a powerful coordinated strike on Friday, the Ukrainian military bombarded Russian bases in occupied Crimea with no fewer than 40 deep-strike munitions. “Russian channels are in panic as debris is hitting targets,” the Estonian analyst War translated reported.
Updated Dec 1, 2024....An archival image of Ukrainian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers dropping Storm Shadow missiles. For all mass & sophistication, it appears raid was primarily a feint—one, Ukrainians hope will compel Russians to divert additional air defenses from elsewhere along 800-mile front line of Russia’s wider war on Ukraine. In that way, the Ukrainian attack on Crimea could facilitate later Ukrainian attacks that aren’t feints. Say, raids targeting Russian command posts and supply lines in Kursk Oblast in western Russia—where 60,000 Russian and North Korean troops are counterattacking 20,000 Ukrainian troops holding a 250-square-mile salient. Or targeting key Russian infrastructure in Donetsk Oblast, currently the locus of a powerful Russian offensive that kicked off a year ago.
For the Friday assault, the Ukrainian air force, intelligence directorate and other commands assembled one of the most diverse mixes of munitions for a single operation so far in the 33-month wider war. According to the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, D.C., they included British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles launched by air force Sukhoi Su-24 bombers, air force S-200 air-defense missiles converted into long-range surface-to-surface weapons, strike drones from the intelligence directorate as well as unidentified ballistic missiles, presumably fired by the army.
The mix of weapons—some coming in high and fast, others coming in low and slow—surely complicated Russia’s efforts to defeat the attack. “Ukrainian forces continue to leverage Western-provided weapons to conduct strikes using more complex strike packages against military objects in Russia's deep rear,” ISW noted.

Germany announces Ukraine military aid.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged $680 million in military aid for Ukraine as he pledged support for the country during a visit Monday to Kyiv. Scholz said Ukraine can rely on Germany, and that his visit was meant to reinforce that commitment. He said the new military equipment is set to be delivered to Ukraine this month.
The visit comes amid questions about future Western aid for Ukraine with the United States set to go through a change of leadership in January.
Ukraine’s military said Monday it shot down 52 of 110 drones that Russian forces launched in attacks overnight. The intercepts took place over the Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, Poltava, Sumy, Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr regions, the air force said.

Day 1013....On 2 December, there are a lot of updates from the Kursk direction. Here, in a desperate attempt to penetrate the Ukrainian salient from west, the Russians have committed their entire arsenal of armored vehicles to the battle. However, the devastating losses inflicted by Ukraine’s layered defenses seem to have exhausted their reserves of armor in Kursk, leaving them with no options other than to resort to pure infantry assaults on foot with even more catastrophic outcomes.
In addition, the DPR confirmed that by 22 Dec 2022, 4,163 of their servicemen had been killed and 17,329 wounded. Subsequently, leaked US intelligence documents cited Russian FSB that Russian forces suffered 110,000 casualties by 28 February 2023.

Why Russia is Losing Everywhere: Ukraine, Syria, and Beyond. Chuck Pfarrer discusses explains that Russia is showing all of the signs of having fallen into a quagmire with no strategy or hope of being able to get out, with Kyiv Post’s Jason Smart.
When Russia concentrates most of its force on a singular target, as they have now for years in Ukraine, we see that it does not spell-out a quick Russian victory. Now with Russia's global projects - including Ukraine, Syria, Georgia, Moldova, and in Africa – receiving heavy pushback, Moscow simply does not have the capacity to respond to all of the five alarm fires at the same time. Does this mean that there are cracks beginning to show in the Kremlin's global strategy?.

Ukrainian forces liberate Novomlynsk, gain control of Oskil River’s right bank in Kharkiv Oblast. Ukrainian troops raise their flags over Novomlynsk, forcing Russian occupiers into a chaotic retreat as artillery and drones disrupt their crossings. Ukrainian army has liberated one of the settlements in Kharkiv Oblast—Novomlynsk, monitoring project DeepState.
Located on right bank of Oskil River, Novomlynsk has become a critical point in the defense against Russian advances, particularly as Russian forces have attempted to establish a foothold across the river in Kharkiv Oblast. Its geographical position makes it a pivotal point for controlling surrounding areas vital to military logistics.
Khortytsia, Ukraine’s op-strategic group, has also confirmed that Ukrainian flags are now flying over Novomlynsk and that Ukrainian forces control the right bank of the Oskil River, where the settlement is located.

March 8th, a former U.S. Marine Smothers read a Forbes about a new experimental Russian FPV drone communicated with operator via a fiber optic cable rather than radio. It impossible to jam. Smothers hit to Ukraine via his Drone Reaper website immediately realized Ukrainian forces needed,” he fiber optic drones could be a game changer — but Russians had them. He took on the mission of ensuring Ukraine would field its own unjammable drones with more systems packed along front. FPVs launched by Ukraine were downed by jamming. So Ukrainian stopped trying to fly FPV attacks to protected positions, they ran into a wall of jamming. But a fiber optic FPV completely negate this type of protection.
Smothers set about building fiber optic drone. 3-mths prototype headed to Ukraine, a missionary on mission: from Shelf On To the Battlefield, knew Ukraine needed a low-cost solution. FPV drones typically cost $500. Ukrainians needed affordable solutions original design used about $360. FPV drone into an unjammable fiber-optic. Krab Tech helped design was battle ready. He set for Ukraine Aid Op, Tech United (who helped develop drone) & Defense Tech For Ukraine to govt’s Brave1 defense technology accelerator, military drone Special Detachment drone makers like Wild Hornets, Vyriy & Dronarnia, right up to state-run Ukroboronprom, by sharing his designs providing basic hardware, Smothers encouraged everyone to try converting their own FPVs into fiber drones. Only thing he was selling was idea. He stresses that the whole project was very much a team effort. Fiber FPV into action for 1st time, drone performed as flawlessly as demo completely unaffected by jammers, FPV sent back a clear signal right up to the point of impact.
“There a great roar when it hit,” says Smothers. “And I had a feeling of accomplishment."

Here was one major reason to progress.
Russian electronic warfare had been growing steadily more intense, with more & more systems packed along the front line. Reports suggested that 50% or more of the FPVs launched by Ukraine were being downed by jamming.
