More than 1,000 North Korean military casualties in Ukraine war, says South Korea. More than 1,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded since they were sent to fight alongside Russian troops in Ukraine, according to South Korean military officials.

On Monday, South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said: “We assess North Korean troops, who have recently engaged in combat with Ukrainian forces, have suffered around 1,100 casualties.” The JCS did not say how many troops had been killed in action, the claims underline risks posed to North’s untested armed forces, amid reports the regime is poised to send further reinforcements to Ukraine.
Last week South Korea’s spy agency claimed at least 100 North Korean troops died in conflict since being sent into combat this month. The high number of casualties could be attributed to the “unfamiliar battlefield environment, the North Korean forces are being used as expendable frontline assault units, & their lack of capability to counter drone attacks”

Massive drone attacks were reportedly carried out overnight against targets in at least seven Russian oblasts and the temporarily occupied Crimea, according to numerous reports from local Telegram channels and the Russian Defense Ministry (MoD) on Dec. 31. The Russian Telegram channel Shot reported at least a dozen of powerful explosions at about 3:40 a.m. EET followed by a fire at the Yartsevo oil depot in Smolensk Oblast. The “Ukrainian UAV attack” was allegedly “suppressed” by air defenses, local Governor Vasily Anokhin said, adding that debris from one of the drones fell on the territory of an oil depot, which “causing a fuel spill and the ignition of fuel and lubricants.”

At the end of the day, the assault failed, said Lieutenant-Colonel Dmytro Pavlenko-Kryzheshevskyi, 36, the chief of intelligence for the brigade, which provided the video battle, he said, was typical of assaults taking place across hundreds of km of the front, where Ukrainian forces are waging dozens of pitched battles for patches of land no bigger than a few city blocks.
Despite staggering Russian losses – with more than 1,500 killed & wounded everyday in recent weeks, western estimates – scope of attacks continues to grow, according to soldiers at the front as military analysts said.

As Russia is throwing greater numbers of soldiers into assaults than it did in some earlier stages of fighting, Lt-Col Pavlenko-Kryzheshevskyi said.
The troops have also been increasingly using electric scooters, motorcycles & ATVs to allow them to disperse quickly across front, he said.
“Hitting just one piece of equipment carrying 15 people, well, that’s possible, it can be done quite easily. But when those 15 people are riding electric scooters, that’s a very big problem. “For them, it’s quite normal to use 150 to 200 soldiers for offensive actions,” he said, speaking via video from a command post describing battle around Toretsk in December shown in the video footage.
The relentless Russian attacks have led to a buckling of the lines in parts of eastern Ukraine.

Russians have been slowly but steadily advancing on Pokrovsk, a vital military hub have advanced to within 3.2km of the main highway into battered city, according to the Centre for Defence Strategies, a Ukrainian research group. North, fierce urban battles are raging in Chasiv Yar and Toretsk, towns long stood as the barricades holding back direct Russian assaults on the agglomeration of the major cities at the heart of the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian attacks on Russian border areas killed two people, according to local governors. One was killed by a mortar strike on a village in the Bryansk region, officials said. Near the frontlines in the Kursk region, where Ukraine launched an offensive last August, a man walking down a road was killed in a drone strike, the regional governor said. Moscow and Kyiv have escalated their aerial campaigns through the first weeks of winter in what has been seen as an attempt to gain the upper hand ahead of US president-elect Donald Trump taking office later in January.

The US expects to make announcements about additional security assistance for Ukraine in coming days, White House spokesperson John Kirby said on Friday. Announcements were expected, without providing specifics, after Washington last week announced $5.9bn in additional military budget assistance for Ukraine a meeting of Ukraine defence contact group in Germany would be held on 9 January.

Putin, I judge may have been a brilliant spy but is being exposed as a dreadful military commander. He has forgotten, or more likely is unaware of, the principles of warfare, especially one that reinforce success not failure. 3-week special military op now approaching its fourth year, most likely that Zelensky will still be in power this time next year. Putin’s best hope may be a villa in North Korea or breaking rocks in Urals. Russian history does not paint a rosy picture for failed dictators.

Ukraine best news for last year 2024.

A terrorist act. No, of course not. Igor Anatolyevich recently called me & scoffed at being sanctioned by British. This is a classic British assassination can see this is a signature move of the British special services.” Appearing on a state TV program 60 Minutes, military expert Igor Korotchenko argued that UK most likely participated in killing by spying on Kirillov through its agents based out of British Embassy in Moscow. He blamed MI6 British military intelligence for establishing his whereabouts & feeding information to Kyiv. Korotchenko said: “We clearly feel the hand of Anglo-Saxons.”

(This is a long-running Russian obsession dating back to18th century but core belief for Russian spies and Putin is also spies himself, reference to British intelligence action against early Soviet Union.) In this instance, Russia’s legendary obsession with blaming “Anglo-Saxons” for all sorts of domestic & global events has another dimension. As Solovyov exclaimed on his evening show: “There is no war in Moscow, so no one guarded [Kirillov.]” But war came anyway, same propagandists who proudly predicted Ukraine could be easily defeated in a matter of days or even mere hours, & constantly described Ukrainians as animals, insects, & dim-witted villagers incapable of standing up to mighty Putin can’t admit their invasion & the savagery it unleashed consequences for the perpetrators.
The imperial mindset of discounting Russia’s neighbors as hapless and easy-to-conquer natives obscures the fact that danger lies a lot closer to home than Great Britain. Truth is that Ukrainians have developed a highly effective intelligence service adept at working inside Russia’s supposed ironclad security system and capable of striking at the heart of the state. No wonder Russia’s elite try to concoct a lie that is easier to swallow.

U.S. Aid Is Going to Ukraine? Not With Trump.
How Much U.S. Aid Is Going to Ukraine?
Nine charts illustrate the extraordinary level of support US has provided Ukraine in its war against Russian invaders. As the war in Ukraine continues in its third year, our initiative on securing Ukraine’s future is tracking the conflict with timely analysis and policy recommendations. Every year, US sends billions of dollars in aid—much more than any other country—to beneficiaries around the world in pursuit of its security, economic and humanitarian interests.

Since Russia’s invasion in Feb 2022, Ukraine has become far & away on top recipient of U.S. foreign aid, marks first time that a Euro country has held the top spot since Harry S. Truman admin directed vast sums into rebuilding continent through Marshall Plan after World War II.

How much money has the United States provided Ukraine?. Since the war began, the U.S. Congress has voted through five bills that have provided Ukraine with ongoing aid, doing so most recently in April 2024. The total budget authority under these bills—the “headline” figure often cited by news media—is $175 billion. The historic sums are helping a broad set of Ukrainian people and institutions, including refugees, law enforcement, and independent radio broadcasters, though most of the aid has been military-related. Dozens of other countries, including most members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) & the European Union (EU), are also providing large aid packages to Ukraine.

These Mirage 2000-5 jets, originally part of the French Air & Space Force inventory, have been retrofitted with advanced capabilities by France’s Directorate General of Armaments (DGA).

Designed primarily as interceptors, modified jets are now equipped to carry & deploy SCALP-EG & Storm Shadow cruise missiles, both of which are currently in Ukraine’s arsenal...
