Slovakia likely to hand over MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine

Ukraine takes another bite out of Russia as Moscow grinds on in Donetsk. Ukraine also announced significant investments in unmanned and long-range systems, where it has an edge.

Ukrainian forces launched a new surprise offensive inside Russia, expanding their salient in Kursk towards the north and east, as Kyiv’s counterinvasion passed its five-month mark this week. 9 Jan 2025

Geolocated footage showed Ukrainian forces moving from their base in Sudzha towards Berdin, capturing fields & entering settlement Sunday. By Monday, Ukrainian forces captured settlements Russkoye Porechnoye & Novosotnitsky. All three settlements lie on the main road between Sudzha & regional capital, Kursk. The Russian bloggers said Ukrainian forces were reported to have advanced in three waves using company-sized assaults backed by armoured vehicles, the Russian bloggers said.

Ukrainian forces also seem to have used High Mobility Army Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to block Russian reinforcements. “As in August, the enemy is actively covering up his offensive actions with HIMARS strikes,” wrote a Russian reporter. “He is trying to knock out our suitable reserves, artillery and drone operators.”

General Mykhailo Drapatyi, Ukraine's Ground Forces chief, reported to President Volodymyr Zelensky on the roots of the problems facing the French-trained 155th "Anne of Kyiv" Brigade and presented solutions, Drapatyi said on Jan. 8.
(58th Brigade press service). The general's remarks followed a media investigation that claimed soldiers of the unit, currently deployed near Pokrovsk, have suffered losses and gone AWOL (absent without leave) in large numbers due to poor command and organization within Ukraine’s military leadership.

"Most of the systemic shortcomings were committed by the Ground Forces Command, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the Operational Command," the commander wrote on social media. Drapatyi was appointed to lead the Ground Forces last Nov, months after the brigade was formed. Without revealing all details b4 "all the circumstances are established," Drapatyi acknowledged "inadequate management," "mistakes in recruitment," &  "imperfect training planning" within the unit.

For first time in Russia’s 35-mth wider war on Ukraine, Ukrainians has tank advantage over Russians. But only only along certain stretches of the 800-mile front. Bunyatov, commander of a unit in 24th Assault Battalion Aidar with call sign Osman, also reported that Russians have almost wiped Chasiv Yar off the face of the earth. "Nothing is left of the city of Chasiv Yar except for basements and empty walls," Osman wrote on his Telegram channel.
“This is a sign our warriors are holding strong, & the overall defense on the front is more or less stable. Gloomy signs in gloomy times, but unfortunately, these are the realities of war.”

The Ukrainian Air Force has created a commission to investigate whether key personnel are being transferred to the front lines amid a shortage of troops defending the east. The move comes after a major controversy erupted after one unit claimed its MiG-29 Fulcrum maintainers were sent to infantry, drastically affecting its ability to launch sorties. Latest of several such allegations. Ukrainian officials have denied.

Ukraine’s diplomatic push for F-16 fighter jets has gained momentum in recent days with number developments suggesting Kyiv’s efforts are beginning to bear fruit, albeit with some way still to go. But now is up to Trump ahh.

Yet it’s undeniable that a topic which not long ago was considered off the table, is now being on Trump table at the U.S. president white house. about in a similar way like heavy tanks and long-range missiles case – both of which Ukraine has now received – Trump talked in day, his gang ask for 100 days, but may be few months or year to time to see some peace between Russia/Ukraine. In response to a surge in suspicious drone activity, Germany’s govt has given green light to a proposal allowing military to shoot down drones operating over critical infrastructure and military sites. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s cabinet approved the measure on January 15, but it must still pass through the Bundestag, the country’s federal parliament, before becoming law, proposed amendment to Aviation Security Act would permit Bundeswehr to use force against drones in cases where threats to critical facilities or human lives cannot be mitigated by police intervention.

MOSCOW : Ukraine launched an attack on Russia's Belgorod region with six US-made ATACMS missiles on Thursday (Jan 16), the Russian Defence Ministry said on Friday.
Russia said to retaliate, all the missiles had been intercepted, resulting & no casualties or damage.
Moscow has said it will respond every time Ukraine fires ATACMS or British-supplies Storm Shadow cruise missiles into Russia. Ukraine first used those weapons to strike at Russian territory in November after obtaining permission from Washington and London. Russia replied by firing a new intermediate-range hypersonic missile, the Oreshnik, and has said it may do so again.

The defence ministry said that over the past week, Russia shot down 12 ATACMS, eight Storm Shadows, 48 US HIMARS rockets, seven French-made Hammer guided bombs and 747 drones. Reuters could not verify those figures. It reported for the first time Russian forces had captured the village of Slovianka in eastern Ukraine, one of 8 Ukrainian settlements it said had been taken in the past week, Russia had carried out 8 major strikes past week on parts of Ukraine's gas energy infrastructure too were supporting military facilities & Ukrainian defence industry.

KYIV: President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Nov 28) threatened to strike "decision-making centres" in Kyiv with Russia's new hypersonic missile, hours after Moscow pummelled Ukraine's energy grid in an attack that left a million people without power.

Russia fired more than 90 missiles and around 100 drones during the barrage, according to Kyiv, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urging his allies to respond firmly to what he dubbed Russian "blackmail".

Putin said the fresh bombardment was a "response" to Ukrainian strikes on his territory with Western missiles.

The nearly three-year war has seen a sharp escalation in recent days, with both sides deploying new weapons in a bid to gain the upper hand before United States President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. We do not rule out the use of Oreshnik against the military, military-industrial or decision-making centres, including in Kyiv," Putin told a press conference in the Kazakh capital Astana, referring to the hypersonic missile.

Kyiv's govt district - an area of the capital where multiple government buildings are located - is protected with intense security, but fears for it have risen over the last week. Russia tested its new Oreshnik ballistic missile on Ukraine last week, and Putin boasted on Thursday that firing several of the weapons at once would have the equivalent force of a nuclear strike, or a "meteorite" hit.
