“Ukraine newer or newly formed brigade did not undergo the necessary combat training,” one relative of a 157th Mechanized Brigade trooper told Hromadske, “but it was immediately sent to the hottest areas” including the besieged fortress city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine.

Capturing Pokrovsk is one of Russia’s top objectives as its wider war on Ukraine grinds into its fourth year. Defending it is one of Ukraine’s top objectives. Given its importance, it’s shocking to many observers that the Ukrainian army keeps reinforcing the city with dysfunctional units, including the 155th and 157th Mechanized Brigades. Both units began falling apart before they even arrived in Pokrovsk. “The situation in the 157th Mechanized Brigade mirrors that of other brigades in the 150th series,” noted from Militaryland, a collective that tracks Ukrainian military force structure. “Soldiers were taken during the formation process, units hastily deployed to front & sent without proper training, resulting in heavy casualties.”

The 157th Mechanized Brigade is one of the eight 150-series brigades—also including the 151st, 153rd, 154th, 155th, 156th, 158th and 159th Mechanized Brigades—that formed in 2023 or early 2024 and, after a lengthy period of training, began arriving on the front starting late last year.
Brigades are big, some with roughly double the usual 2,000 manpower billets of a Ukrainian ground combat brigade. But they’re also fragile—with inexperienced leaders, too few modern armored vehicles & poor morale that often results in a high desertion rate. crying

Trump’s. Here's Trump’s 90-day freeze on U.S. aid has left independent Ukrainian media without critical funding first week in office, reviewing whether distribution aligned with his foreign policy. Trump: In wealthier economies, newspapers faced a choice: Even then, it’s an uphill battle — while NY Times has turned a profit, the Washington Post has not. For independent media never had opportunity to develop & adapt. Market has merciless & independent outlets have faced stiff competition from oligarch-owned media — lavishly funded but designed to serve their owners’ interests rather than public good & yet Ukraine can't afford to not have independent media. Watchdog journalism is essential for holding those in power accountable. It’s a cornerstone of any democracy.

Zelenskyy outlines Ukraine’s key demands for a peace agreement. He stated that a peace agreement must be more than just formal commitments on paper. Ukraine will insist on real security guarantees.
He made this statement in an interview with Fox News."I know that President Trump is not very happy about NATO – we talked about this. But we need security guarantees," the Head of State said. He is convinced that without collective security guarantees, European guarantees alone will not be enough. This issue has been discussed previously.
According to the Ukrainian leader, European countries understand that without the involvement of the United States and President Trump, security guarantees will remain insufficient.

A Russian drone attack on a residential block killed nine people including three elderly couples in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, officials said on Thursday. "This is a terrible tragedy, a terrible Russian crime. It is very important that the world does not pause in putting pressure on Russia for this terror," President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media. National Police later said the search operation had been completed after 19 hours, with rescuers finding nine bodies in the ruins, while 13 people were wounded. Among the dead were three couples — men and women between the ages of 61 and 74 — Ukrainian prosecutors said. Those killed also included a 37-year-old woman, while her eight-year-old daughter was wounded, the Sumy prosecutor's office said.

Sumy lies just over the border from Russia in northeastern Ukraine and has been regularly targeted by Moscow. Around 255,000 people lived there before the war.

U.S. military is providing Ukraine with around 90 interceptors for the
Patriot air defense system, taking these from Israeli stocks, according to a recent
report. The development, the implications of which
we addressed in detail in the past, comes as Israel mulls whether to approve the transfer of significant quantities of Soviet- and Russian-made weapons to Ukraine that were seized from Hezbollah militants in recent operations.

Earlier today, a USAF C-17 transport flew from Ramstein Airbase in Germany to Nevatim Airbase in Israel, before flying directly to Rzeszow International Airport, the gateway for western aid headed to Ukraine. C-17 roughly used 3-hrs on the ground in Israel.

As well as the interceptors, can immediately be used by Ukraine’s existing Patriot systems, the sources state that other components from the system, including radars, will be provided to Kyiv from Israeli stocks. These items, however, will first be refurbished in the U.S. Aa spokesperson for Israeli prime minister’s office confirmed at least one Patriot system had been returned to US but said they didn’t know if it would ultimately be delivered to Ukraine. IDF operated PAC-2 GEM-T version of the Patriot, with 8 batteries reportedly deployed before their withdrawal. Local known by Hebrew name Yahalom, meaning diamond, the systems underwent local upgrades in Israel. Cool

To Ukraine in particular, the PAC-2’s terminal-phase anti-ballistic missile capability is of particular relevance, although system is highly versatile & able to defeat a broad spectrum of targets. Not only can the PAC-2 GEM series defeat fast-moving ballistic missiles, for Eg an improved seeker makes it better able to engage smaller targets or ones otherwise with smaller radar cross-sections. This makes it a formidable asset to deploy against fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones.

Pentagon has provided only three U.S.-made Patriot batteries to Ukraine, while Germany has donated another three batteries and six launchers, the Netherlands has donated five launchers, and Romania has donated a battery that was funded by U.S. and Norway. On video indicates, at least some of these systems have already been lost and they remain among the most prized targets for the Russian military.

The delivery of Israeli military hardware to Ukraine, even if by a roundabout route, is highly significant. Since start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Israeli govt has repeatedly refused to send arms to Ukraine, while seeking to maintain relations with Moscow. In particular, Israel has been worried that direct support for Ukraine could be met by a Russian response in the form of providing Iran with more capable weapons that could in turn be used against Israel.

One Ukrainian official reportedly told Axios that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu refused to take calls on the issue of Patriot transfers “for weeks.”
Final Israeli approval for the arrangement was given in late September, an Israeli official told the same publication. There’s also a precedent for this, in the transfer of artillery ammunition from Israeli stocks to Israel in 2023. In the same way, shells were officially handed over to the U.S before being transferred to Ukraine. Russia was told in advance about the Patriot transfer.

Russian economic meltdown as 100s of car dealerships close & steel industry 'tanks'

Ukraine deploys long-range drone capable of 2,000 km or 1,242 miles & carrying a 250-km air bomb, Unmanned Systems Forces said on Jan. 31. Drone is described as “unique development”, a potential game changer on battlefield. Military did not disclose number of drones in service or additional details.

"Russian propaganda constantly claims to have 'shot down' such aircraft, but explosions at military-industrial complexes, refineries, ammunition & depots suggest otherwise," Ukraine regularly targets Russian oil facilities with long-range drone strikes in an effort to disrupt fuel supplies to the Russian military and reduce Moscow's energy export revenues. Oil profits remain a crucial source of funding for Russia's war efforts. The drones, operated by Ukraine's 14th Regiment of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, have targeted Russian facilities for more than a year, “flying hundreds and sometimes thousands of kilometers,” according to the statement.

“There have already been dozens of such missions, and there will be more,” the military said. The Kyiv Independent said Ukraine produced more than 30,000 bomber drones in 2024, according to Ukraine's Strategic Industries Minister Herman Smetanin. How Ukraine’s new drone-missile hybrids are changing long-range weapon technology

Incredibly, log tank— used by Russian soldiers, makeshift rides the increasingly vehicle-starved Russians have constructed—workeduntil it didn’t. According to the Estonian analyst WarTranslated, the improvised vehicle “withstood drone attacks but succumbed to modern artillery.” A Ukrainian drone observed the vehicle, immobilized and abandoned on a dirt track outside Velyka Novosilka.

The log tank’s endurance in the face of relentless drone attack parallels the plight of an Ukrainian Leopard 1A5 tank that, thanks to its own add-on armor, recently survived at least eight drone strikes before finally suffering catastrophic damage.

Layers of extra armor, whether metal or wood, can blunt the effects of the tiny FPV drones and their small warheads, which usually weigh no more than a few pounds. But that same armor might not stop a 100-pound artillery shell packed with 25 pounds of explosive fill. Log tank was unusually well-made for a do-it-yourself Russian assault vehicle, troops who built vehicle proudly posted a video of their work, “technical device for transporting personnel” boasted sheet-metal sides covered in thick rubber. “Between the armored capsule and the external lattice armor". One soldier explained. “they welded sheet metal,” hinged door was also reinforced with bricks. All armor was enough to deflect FPV drones, which fly just a few tens of miles per hour, often strike their targets along the sides.

But artillery shells streak in nearly vertically at a speed of a mile per second—and can punch right through a vehicle’s top armor, which is usually the thinnest. Log tank’s sacrifice wasn’t in vain. After gradually marching on Velyka Novosilka from the fallen fortress town of Vuhledar since late last year, Russians made their final push into Velyka Novosilka in recent days. Sunday, Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies marked town as “captured.”

It was, and continues to be, a costly effor to enter Velyka Novosilka & consolidating their control over town, Russian kept attacking north & west. A large Russian assault on Sunday involving around 20 vehicles reportedly failed as Ukrainian knocked out at least seven of the vehicles.

"Most democratic nations have elections in their time of war. I think it is important they do so," Kellogg said. "Good for democracy. They have offered few details about their strategy ending the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two, nor when they might unveil such a plan.

Trump plan evolving, no policy decisions have been made, but Kellogg & other White House officials have discussed in recent days pushing Ukraine to agree to elections as part of an initial truce with Russia, knowledge of conversations and former U.S. official briefed about election proposal said. Trump officials debating whether to push for an ceasefire be4 trying to broker a more permanent deal, Trump admin discussions said. If presidential elections were to take place the winner could be responsible for negotiating a longer-term pact with Moscow, Kellogg said.

The sources declined to be named in order to discuss sensitive polic & security issues. Its unclear how such a Trump proposal would be greeted in Kyiv. President Zelenskiy has said Ukraine could hold elections this year if fighting ends & strong security guarantees are in place to deter Russia from renewing hostilities. A senior adviser to Kyiv & a Ukrainian govt source said the Trump admin has yet formally requested Ukraine hold presidential elections by end of the year.
