Live grenade in birthday gift kills aide to Ukraine’s military chief

An aide to the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s military was killed after receiving a live grenade as a birthday present that was immediately detonated by his 13-year-old son.

A Major Gennadiy Chastyakov, who served as the assistant to Valery Zaluzhny, had received a gift box from a colleague for his birthday on Monday that contained several “Western model” grenades, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko wrote on Telegram.

Chastyakov’s 13-year-old son then picked up one of the grenades and started turning the ring, Klymenko wrote. As Chastyakov took the grenade from him, the ring was pulled out and the weapon detonated.

As Chastyakov took the grenade from him, the ring was pulled out and the weapon detonated.

Zaluzhny, the chief of Ukraine’s military, wrote on Telegram that his “assistant and close friend” died “under tragic circumstances.”

Police found five more unexploded grenades in the apartment, Klymenko said.

Kyiv regional police reported that the assistant’s son was seriously injured by the explosion, and is being medically treated.

According to Klymenko, police identified the “fellow serviceman” who gave the gift to Chastyakov, and found two similar grenades during a search of his office.

Police said criminal proceedings had been initiated and an investigation is ongoing, though the Ukrainian interior ministry later said it considers the death an “accident” based on preliminary information.

Answer is here...Ukrainian forces carried out precision strikes against Russian air defenses and other strategic targets across occupied Crimean peninsula has paved way for devastating September attacks that seriously damaged a Russian warship and submarine at dock in Sevastopol along with the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. While, Ukraine was also active at sea and on land, using innovative Ukrainian-produced naval drones to hit Russian warship and army supply vessel in the Black Sea.

This campaign of drone and missile attacks has succeeded in forcing Russia to withdraw bulk of its Black Sea Fleet from Sevastopol and retreat to ports in the eastern Black Sea.

In early October.  it emerged Kremlin plans to build a new naval base also, Russian-occupied Georgian region of Abkhazia on eastern coast of Black Sea.

9 November, Russian military bloggers said that Ukrainian troops had established control over new positions in Krynky (30 km northeast of Kherson and 2 km from the Dnipro River) and stormed Russian positions south and southwest of the settlement.

Unused Russian forces on Kherson front will not be enough to respond to Ukrainian operations on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River.

The 69-ton, four-person Leopard 2A6 with its extra-long, 55-caliber main gun is one of the best tanks against Russia’s 22-month wider war on Ukraine. But it also is an endangered species in Ukrainian service.

Don’t tell that to the 47th Brigade’s sole tank battalion. The 47th Brigade’s tankers are as aggressive now as they have been at any point in the brigade’s five-month first rotation, which began in early June when the unit led one of the initial—and disastrous—assaults kicking off Kyiv’s long-anticipated southern counteroffensive.

After leading the attack in southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Oblast for four months, the 47th Brigade in October redeployed to eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast. There, it reinforced the Ukrainian garrison in Avdiivka, which for a month now has been under relentless assault by a multi-brigade Russian force.

The 47th Brigade brought with it its hundred or so American-made M-2 infantry fighting vehicles and its 18 surviving Leopard 2A6s. Arriving on Avdiivka’s vulnerable northern flank, the brigade immediately rolled into action
