Comin’ Atcha! The AASM Hammer Bomb – A New Edge for the Ukrainian Air Force. The Ukrainian Air Force has been successfully using the French high precision AASM Hammer bomb since March 2024 – yielding significant benefits in certain areas of the front.
The AASM Hammer is not just a bomb, but a modular air-to-ground weapon system using high-precision aerial-guided technology.
It has been in French service since 2007, but Paris announced the transfer of these bombs to Ukraine in early 2024, with the aim to deliver about 600 over the course of the year, equating to 50 per month.
French weapons manufacturers have signaled their capability to push out higher numbers – up to 90 bombs per month – which now just depends on a green light from the French government. Negotiations are already underway to increase production rates.
Developed by the French company Safran Electronics & Defense, the AASM Hammer is based on an ordinary unguided bomb, to which a kit is added, which turns it into a smart munition.

The weapon’s dual-acronym name comes from French – Armement Air-Sol Modulaire (Modular Air-to-Ground Armament) and English HAMMER – Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range.
The US Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range (JDAM-ER, or GBU-38) systems, which are also supplied to Ukraine, are built work according to a similar modular principle.
Other modular weapons include systems dating back to mid-1960s such as US Paveway series of laser-guided bombs (GBU-10/12/24/27) & the electro-optically-guided family of GBU-15 glide bomb, its rocket-propelled sibling, the AGM-130 missile. In general, the idea of creating guided aerial bombs is logical – with the development of navigation systems and the creation of a guidance module, it has become possible to create a hybrid of a missile with a conventional aerial bomb, which is characterized by hit accuracy and a relatively low cost compared to some types of missiles.
The modification of ammunition in e case of AASM Hammer has many advantages over conventional aerial bombs:
During production, there is no need to spend resources on creating the bomb itself, since it is based on ordinary aerial bombs produced in large volumes. This means lower costs for the disposal of existing, traditional ammunition, which after modernization, acquire new qualities and properties and strengthen the defense potential of the country

70 kilometers,
and GPS navigation, and advanced variants can have additional infrared or laser guidance for even greater strike accuracy.
Thanks to GPS guidance, the AASM Hammer can hit targets with a nominal or median miss distance of up to 10 meters. If laser guidance is used, tests have shown that the AASM Hammer hits a target from 50 kilometers with a nominal deviation of 1 meter.

Ukrainian military has been successfully using the AASM Hammer since the beginning of March 2024. The first bomb was dropped on the occupiers at the Avdiivka coke plant. Subsequently, it was probably the AASM Hammer that destroyed the command post of the Russians in Kherson region.
Possible modifications
The attack range of AASM Hammer depends on speed of the carrier aircraft and its altitude maximum range of bomb is 70 kilometers, if launch altitude is low – 15 kilometers. In 2022, a new range extension kit 1,000-kilogram bombs was introduced, which can increase range upto 200 k/m.
Addition of rocket motor makes, version to have a much longer range. Modification is supposed to extend bomb’s range to 200 kilometers, but it is not known whether France plans to purchase transfer systems with this kit rocket motor of latest model. In addition, Ukraine would not mind getting more powerful bombs of 500 and 1,000 kilograms, similar to JDAM family of weapons, already have 500 kg (GBU-32) and 1000 kg (GBU-31) models. Therefore, it is hoped that a decision on the transfer of other AASM Hammer versions will be made – all the more so, since info has already been announced about possibility of providing Ukraine with French-based Mirage 2000 aircraft.

(31-05-2024, 09:54 PM)Tee tiong huat Wrote: Biden allows Ukraine to hit some targets in Russia with US weapons. Updated 31 May 2024
US President Joe Biden has given Ukraine permission to use American-supplied weapons to strike targets in Russia, but only near the Kharkiv region, US officials say.
One told BBC News his team had been directed to ensure Ukraine was able to use US weapons for "counter-fire purposes" to "hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them".
Russian forces have made gains in the Kharkiv region in recent weeks after a surprise offensive in the area, close to the border with Russia.
On Friday, Ukrainian officials said three people had been killed and 16 injured in Russian shelling of a residential building in a suburb of Kharkiv city.
US official also told BBC: "Our policy with respect to prohibiting the use of Army Tactical Missile System [ATACMS] or long-range strikes inside of Russia has not changed.”
When asked by CBS, the BBC's US partner, whether the new policy included attacking Russian aircraft, an official said: "We’ve never told them [Ukraine] they can’t shoot down a Russian airplane over Russian soil that’s coming to attack them.”
The White House and state dept had no immediate comment. UK earlier signalled that it was open to an easing of restrictions on how Ukraine could use weapons supplied by the West.
Despite concerns that such a development could further escalate the conflict, several European leaders also recently called for restrictions on the use of such weapons to be relaxed.
But Washington, which provides the bulk of Ukraine's weaponry, had resisted easing these restrictions over fears of escalation. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted at the shift during a visit to Moldova on Wednesday. "At every step along the way, we've adapted and adjusted as necessary," he said.
"And so that's exactly what we'll do going forward."

Ukraine makes gains in its war on fighting corruption.
They have had some success. Anti-corruption organisation Transparency International ranks Ukraine at its highest level since 2006: currently 104th out of 180 countries in its Corruption Perceptions Index.
"Most Ukrainian anti-corruption institutions are showing pretty good results," A executive director of Transparency International Ukraine, tells the BBC, one such result is arrest of then-Supreme Court head on bribery charges in May 2023.
"This can be a safeguard, if see somebody arrested, one will think twice b4 doing something corrupt," here have been other high-profile arrests too, including agriculture minister Mykola Solsky & an officer with SBU intelligence service, Artem Shylo. They deny any wrongdoing, have been released on bail. Investigations are ongoing.

ANALYSIS: Is Twitter’s Russia Problem Getting ‘Alarmingly’ Worse?. There are growing concerns that Russia is attempting to influence the outcome of the upcoming US elections, as it did in 2016. The lack of action to prevent Moscow’s plan has startled experts.
Do you ever get the vibe that there are a lot more pro-Russian or anti-Ukrainian views being aired now on social media? More than an inkling, you may be picking up on a problem that seems to be worsening: Moscow, as part of a global strategy, is actively seeking to undermine Western democracies.
The upsurge of Russian disinfo, a mere 150 days b4 US presidential elections was not surprise to Ivana Stradner, a Fellow at Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, Kyiv Post contributor, says Russia is engaged in “war over perception” seeking to influence people in West thinking.

Russia’s goal in these exercises is simple: “Russia wants to defeat West,” something they can only hope to do if they 1st defeat Westerners “in our heads” as part of the “cognitive war” Moscow is waging, says Stradner, which is why Russia has invested heavily in info operations across Europe and the US.
Following America’s contentious 2016 elections, an upset saw Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton, accusations made the Russia had manipulated U.S. voters, leading to multi-year investigations, saw federal investigators conclude Russia had “meddled in all big social media.”
The Mueller Report described Russia’s efforts in social media as having been “active measures” & “info warfare” utilized social media campaigns “designed to provoke & amplify political & social discord in trying too on U.S..”
Following weeks of intensive congressional hearings and public scrutiny, social media companies at time universally promised to do better in challenging Russia’s abuse of their platforms to spread disinformation.

Ukraine is now waiting and will use their resource to good use, (me is thinking) at least 10 US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS)i s on standby, knowning this kind of bomb, the ATACMS, is just waiting for Subs to rest then hit again on those Russian Subs defenses in Crimea after all is just a bigger lake.
Ten missiles can hit any of those Subs, the 31st Air Defense Division of the Russian Defense Ministry in occupied Crimea.
Russian independent (Thinking) Telegram channel Astra will maybe report one more time about Subs (kanai-nay) go hit again.

Putin said on Friday. Russia would cease fire and enter peace talks if Ukraine dropped its NATO ambitions and withdrew its forces from four Ukrainian regions claimed by Moscow. On the eve of a peace conference in Switzerland. Russia has not been invited, Putin set out a series of conditions wholly at odds with the terms demanded by Ukraine.
Putin says Russia will cease fire if Ukraine pulls troops from four regions. Friday, 14 Jun 2024.
"Conditions are simple,"listing full withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from entire territory of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in eastern and southern Ukraine.
As soon as they declare in Kyiv that they are ready for such a decision and begin a real withdrawal of troops from these regions, and also officially announce the abandonment of their plans to join NATO - on our side, immediately, literally at the same minute, an order will follow to cease fire and begin negotiations," he said.
"I repeat, we will do this immediately. Naturally, we will simultaneously guarantee the unhindered and safe withdrawal of Ukrainian units and formations."
Russia controls nearly a fifth of Ukrainian territory in the third year of the war. Ukraine says peace can only be based on a full withdrawal of Russian forces and the restoration of its territorial integrity.

This weekend summit in Switzerland, which will be attended by representatives of more than 90 nations organisations, is expected to shy away from territorial issues and focus instead on matters such as food security and nuclear safety in Ukraine. Kremlin has said the gathering will prove "futile" without Russia being represented.

Putin on West's 'theft' of Russia's assets will not go unpunished. Putin also said the country would cease fire and enter peace talks if Ukraine dropped its NATO ambitions.
MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (Jun 14) that plans by Western countries to provide Ukraine with loans using interest from Russian assets frozen abroad was theft and would not go unpunished.
Putin, speaking at a meeting with Foreign Ministry officials, said the way the West had treated Moscow showed that any country could fall victim to a similar Western asset freeze.
"Despite all the chicanery, theft will certainly remain theft. And it will not go unpunished".
"Now it is becoming obvious to all countries, companies (and) sovereign funds that their assets and reserves are far from safe in both the legal and economic sense of the word. "Anyone could be next in line for expropriation by the US and the West." Putin was speaking a day after the leaders of the Group of Seven major democracies agreed on an outline deal to provide US$50 billion of loans for Ukraine using interest from Russian sovereign assets frozen after Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in 2022 in what it called a special military operation.
"We live on the same continent. No matter what happens, you cannot change the geography, we will have to coexist and work together one way or another."

Russia's move on Kharkiv has bogged down.
2 weeks after Russia’s move on Ukraine’s 2nd-largest city stopped moving, meeting fierce resistance from a number of hardened Ukrainian brigades and specialist units sent there from the eastern and southern fronts.
Kyiv declared forces had gone on counterattack in some areas, particularly around the border town of Vovchansk with U.S. majority weapon of which Ukrainian forces control as of June 13, according to open source info. By June 8, Presiden Zelensky declared Russia had “failed” in its offensive on Kharkiv, b'ccs Ukrainian forces were effectively “holding and destroying” the enemy in the area.
Making a judgment regarding the failure or success of an operation depends on the initial strategic goals of the operation in the first place.
Analysts and officials were generally in agreement that Russian forces had little to no chance — and thus no intent — to actually surround or enter Kharkiv itself.
“It's not surprising that the Kharkiv offensive did not advance that far,” said military expert Rob Lee, senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, to the Kyiv Independent, “because we knew that Ukraine had a better defense prepared and we knew pretty early on that Ukraine moved a number of units to strengthen that defense.”

Results on the ground -- As of June 13,
Open source mapping project DeepStateMap, Russian forces have occupied at least 183 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in Kharkiv Oblast, with more territory labeled as a contested “gray zone.”
The gains made are split roughly evenly between two axes.
Immediately north of Kharkiv, Russian forces advanced a maximum distance of around ten kilometers, eventually being stopped outside the village of Lyptsi, itself around 20 kilometers from the Northern Saltivka neighborhood on the outskirts of Kharkiv.

Russia’s failure to get any closer means that Kharkiv remains outside the range of all of Russia’s abundant conventional tubed artillery, as well as Grad multiple-launch rocket artillery, preventing the same kind of wanton barrages the city suffered in the first month of the full-scale invasion from being possible again.
On the other axis further east, fighting continues for Vovchansk, over 70% of which is under the control of Ukrainian forces, according to Nazar Voloshyn, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Khortysia group of forces.
Well-coordinated with electronic attacks that allegedly disabled the Starlink communications of some of the Ukrainian units defending the town, Russia’s early push found success initially, much thanks to the reported lack of properly prepared defensive lines in the areas along the border.
