Tensions between Russia and Ukraine date back to 2014

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine date back to 2014, when the Ukrainian people rebelled against the pro-Russian government under Viktor Yanukovych, who - presumably under pressure from Russia - does not want to sign an association agreement with the EU.

Demonstrations in Kiev turn into bloody riots, Yanukovych flees, and separatists supported by Moscow in eastern Ukraine split off parts of the Donbass region from Ukraine with heavy fighting.

Crimea came under Russian rule.

Since then, eastern Ukraine has never calmed down, and tensions on the demarcation line have remained high. Time and again, people die in gunfire. The Minsk agreement that set out steps to de-escalate in 2014 is never implemented by either side; they hold each other responsible for it.

Escalation from spring 2021
In April 2021 there are first reports that Russia is significantly increasing its troops on the border with Ukraine. The US steps in, declaring its "unwavering support" to Ukraine, while Russia warns the West against redeploying troops to Ukraine. A pattern that will repeat itself in the coming months and will ultimately be the focus of Russia's declaration of war.
