Western democracies are observing this with suspicion. To ensure Western influence and prosperity, political leaders are rushing to strengthen existing ties with other – somewhat – democratic players and build new partnerships. In this light, alliances such as Aukus (Australia, Great Britain and USA) and the Asian Quad (USA, India, Japan, Australia) can be seen, which are directed against the actual or feared Chinese threat.
