It comes just a day after the 74-year-old billionaire applied for a royal pardon on corruption and abuse of office charges.
Partial prison pardon for Shinawatra from King Maha Vajiralongkorn was officially confirmed by the Royal Gazette. The announcement alluded to Shinawatra's past service to the country as prime minister.
"He was loyal to the institution of the monarchy. When he was on trial, he respected the justice system," the statement said, noting that Thaksin also suffered from many health problems.
"His family must be happy. I heard he has high blood pressure. They must be calm," Thailand's new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, of the Pheu Thai Party, added to reporters
