It had been suggested that one of the King's banished sons could return to Thailand following Princess Bajrakitiyabha's hospitalization in December 2022.

The Princess had long been considered the unspoken heir to the throne and had been groomed for royalty since her childhood. . However, the 44-year-old Princess suffered a heart collapse while she was training her dogs. She has since remained hospitalized in a coma with assisted breathing and little hope of recovery.

The king's youngest son, 18-year-old Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, has been raised primarily in Germany, with a developmental disorder that could hamper his ability to occupy the thron

With Vacharaesorn back in Bangkok, it remains to be seen if the Royal Household Office, which tightly controls everything related to the Royal Family, will make any comment or if the King will return to claim his son. In the latter case, the reinstated prince is likely to assume the duties of heir to the throne and is expected to succeed his father.
