Malaysia fails to appeal against ex-PM Najib’s acquittal in 1MDB audit tampering case

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian prosecutors have not appealed against the acquittal of former prime minister Najib Razak in a case of audit tampering related to state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), his lawyers said on Tuesday, risking backlash for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim who has vowed to fight graft.

Mr Anwar is already under pressure from allies and the opposition after his government last week dropped dozens of graft charges against a key ally whose support is essential for the Premier to keep his parliamentary majority.

Dozens of graft charges against Malaysian deputy premier are dismissed deep into his trial. A Malaysian court has dismissed 47 corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at an advanced stage of his trial. Clapping

The perception shift comes as state prosecutors controversially dropped criminal charges against his deputy premier.

Malaysia DPM Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was given “special permission” to meet and dine with former prime minister Najib Razak in prison, the home minister, say reporters. Mr Saifuddin Nasution Ismail was informed of the visit by Prisons Department director-general Nordin Muhamad, who is the only person other than the minister that can authorise.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul rejected the emergency motion filed by Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Perikatan Nasional-Machang) to debate Zahid’s DNAA.

Johari dismissed (Yes a big NO) accusations his decision to reject motion was influenced by prime minister’s stance on the matter after Anwar had said previously that Parliament was not a place to debate the matter. In an immediate response.

Has MAS fixed the illegal money laundering as promised after 1MDB?

"SINGAPORE, July 25 2016 (Reuters) - Singapore’s central bank said on Monday the recent findings in a money laundering probe linked to Malaysian state fund 1MDB had dented the city-state’s reputation as a clean and trusted financial centre.

There is no doubt that the recent findings have made a dent in our reputation as a clean and trusted financial centre,” Ravi Menon, managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, said at its annual news conference.

MAS is determined to fix the problem, working together with the industry. MAS will further strengthen its enforcement capability to conduct rigorous investigations and to take swift and decisive action against errant FIs (financial institutions).”"
