Italy floods leave 13 dead and force 13,000 from their homes

More than 20 rivers have burst their banks in Italy, leaving 13 people dead and forcing thousands from their homes after six months' rainfall fell in a day and a half.

More bodies were found on Thursday after almost every river flooded between Bologna and the north-east coast 115km (70 miles) away.

Some 280 landslides have taken place.

"It was a very bad 48 hours. Water and mud took over our whole village," said Roberta Lazzarini, 71.

Her home of Botteghino di Zocca, south of Bologna, was hit by a torrent on Wednesday. Streets, houses and gardens were inundated and Roberta said she was still scared. read more

malaysia has the current good weather to start preparing for the next flood.
hope they do something. it is more expensive to pay money to save people, repair etc during and after flood.

blin greetings.

yes water flow towards low point. yes does illustrate what happens to a basin. to manage water one has to know the area of the basin. how much rain fall to handle. then dig pond deep enough to let water flow into it.
like the picture you show. dig a hole so deep that all the water flow into it. surely drain also need to be dig to allow water to flow into the pond fast. drain to allow water to flow into sea sometime don't work as in high tide the water can flow reverse.

in china one coastal village where it always flood and face lots of damage from flood. they move the whole village to higher ground with new building. convert the area that always flood into mud pond for farming crockles. with that the villagers are safe from flood and the crockles bring a substantial raise in income to the village. hope our malaysia friends can think along that line. it is also cheaper to build new houses in higher area and relocate people then trying to fix problem by raising road level or dig drain and pond.
