MEDYKA, Poland/SIGHETU MARMATIEI, Romania (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Ukrainians, mostly women and children, traveled to Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia on Friday as the Russian army shelled the capital Ukrainian Kiev, where the men were called to stay to fight the invasion launched by Russia.

Many of them waited for hours in the cold to leave Ukraine in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin's declaration of war. Vehicles massed for several kilometers towards several border crossing points.

In Poland, home to the largest Ukrainian community in the region, with around 1 million people, authorities said the waiting time at the border with Ukraine was between 6 a.m. and 12 a.m. at some points. .

In Medyka, a town in southern Poland about 85 kilometers from Lviv in western Ukraine, many vehicles waited in line as police struggled to control the flow of cars.

"We leave our fathers, husbands, at home, and that's really shit," said 30-year-old Ludmila, who broke down in tears when asked if she was worried about her husband.
