Once "money politics" was introduced, the ruling party recruited the wrong type of politicians i.e. those motivated by money alone - not service to the people. Even if their conscience pricks them to speak up for the long suffering citizens, their spouses will tell them to shut up so that they may continue drawing their obscene wages.
