Tonkin Bay: the beginning of a forgotten provocation and a memorable bloodshed
#1

The American destroyer Maddox arrived on July 31, 1964, in the Gulf of Tonkin, the bay of the South China Sea bordering Vietnam and China, covering almost Hungary. Around the time, this was a particularly neuralgic point in the world, as the communist-controlled northern part of the divided Vietnam and China, as the “inland water” of its allied communist superpower, received special attention from America seeking hegemony in the region.

Maddox's job was to uncover Vietnam's coastguard weapons and formations. Over the next day and a half, the ship, which was quite provocative, carried out its task of disturbing the Vietnamese undisturbed, but on August 2, they too took action.

Nevertheless, it was attacked by three North Vietnamese fastmen; torpedoes and machine gun series were fired at him without prior warning.

According to official figures, there were 58,220 deaths on the American side, and nearly one million on the Vietnamese side (including civilian casualties).

For Vietnam, this war eventually brought victory: they became independent and were able to unite their country. And as time goes on, we can see more and more the total political, military, and especially moral, failure and defeat that this war has meant for the United States.
