Swiss investment bank Credit Suisse has calculated which countries are the world's wealthiest, based on both median and mean wealth.

The bank's conclusions have been surprising, especially to Australians fretting over high prices at the supermarket.

Here's the top 10 based on median wealth.

1. Australia
Top of the list, though it may not feel like it, is Australia.

The median wealth for Australian adults is $415,000.

But that figure has surged by a whopping $42,000 last year alone, thanks to the continuing climb in property prices.

The growing wealth of Australia's richest people has also had a significant impact.

When calculated by the mean, Australia is in fourth place.
