It is probably due to the fact that the cabby spoke sub-standard English with Singlish terminology added to the mix. Educated Sinkies would adjust their accent and steer clear of Singlish terms as far as possible when conversing with tourists.

Singlish is an informal and colloquial version of the English language. In order to be understood by foreigners, Sinkies need to speak in Standard English and avoid using this creole.
