Trump calls Japan "very tough" after years of trading partner plundering U.S.
#1

In a speech on the 2nd regarding the introduction of reciprocal tariffs, U.S. President Trump vented his frustration at how the U.S. has been disadvantaged by "unfair" trade. He also cited Japan, with whom he has had trade friction in the past, as "very tough" for not buying U.S.-made rice or cars, as the justification for the 24% tariff.

"In many cases, our friends are worse than our enemies when it comes to trade," he said, setting out a policy of showing no mercy in tariff policy even against allies and friends in the areas of security and military.
