Greenland will likely be an issue again for the incoming US President Donald Trump: his administration has revived talk about a possible purchase of the island.
In August 2019, Trump confirmed to reporters his interest in buying. "Denmark is basically the owner," Trump said. "We are well allied with Denmark, we protect Denmark. When the concept came up, I said, 'Sure, I would be in.' Strategically, it's interesting and we would be interested."
After Joe Biden took office in 2021, the idea was shelved. But after Trump's election victory, it resurfaced.
American interest in Greenland goes back even further.
▶︎ In 1946, President Harry Truman offered Denmark $100 million for it, but Denmark refused.
▶︎ In 1867, the State Department considered purchasing Greenland and Iceland.
If Denmark hypothetically agreed to sell Greenland to the United States, it would be the largest expansion of American territory in history, surpassing the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
