Turkey-Syria earthquake death toll passes 28,000 as rescue hopes dwindle
#1

Unrest in southern Turkey has disrupted rescue efforts in some places following Monday's deadly earthquake, three rescue groups have said. German rescuers and the Austrian army paused search operations on Saturday, citing clashes between unnamed groups. Security is expected to worsen as food supplies dwindle, one rescuer said.

Extraordinary tales of survival continue to surface even as the death toll in the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday has surpassed 28,000.

Video footage showed a two-month-old baby being rescued yesterday from under the rubble in Turkey’s Hatay province as the crowd clapped and cheered. The child was found alive nearly 128 hours after the earthquake.

A two-year-old girl, a six-month pregnant woman and a 70-year-old woman, is
among those who were rescued five days after the quake.  Turkish media reported.

The ground: What is going on in Earth's inner core?

Summary: Exhaustive seismic data from repeating earthquakes and new data-processing methods have yielded the best evidence yet that the Earth's inner core is rotating - revealing a better understanding of the hotly debated processes that control the planet's magnetic field.

FULL STORY.....Geologists do not fully understand how the Earth's magnetic field generator works, but suspect it is closely linked to dynamic processes near the inner core-outer core boundary area, the researchers said. Shifts in the location of the magnetic poles, changes in field strength and anomalous seismic data have prompted researchers to take a closer look.

"In 1996, a small but systematic change of seismic waves passing through the inner core was first detected by our group, which we interpreted as evidence for differential rotation of the inner core relative to the Earth's surface," said geology professor and study co-author Xiaodong Song, who is now at Peking University. "However, some studies believe that what we interpret as movement is instead the result of seismic waves reflecting off an alternately enlarging and shrinking inner core boundary, like growing mountains and cutting canyons."

The magnitude of the earthquake was quite high. It not only caused many casualties and collapsed houses in Turkey, but also caused serious damage to its neighboring Syria.

Before the earthquake, someone photographed a rare scene in Hatay, Turkey: first there was a rustling sound,Then a mysterious blue light appeared in the skyand then the sound became louder and louder, accompanied by violent shaking, quite frightening.

When deadly earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing thousands. But amid the despair, there have also been stories of "miracles".

This is one of them. When Necla Camuz gave birth to her second son on 27 January, she named him Yagiz, meaning "brave one".

Just 10 days later, at 04:17 local time, Necla was awake feeding her son at their home in southern Turkey's Hatay province. Moments later, they were buried under mounds of rubble.

Necla and her family lived on the second floor of a modern five-storey building in the town of Samandag. It was a "nice building", she says, and she had felt safe there.

No tents, no aid, nothing: Why Syrians feel forgotten. Turkey–Syria earthquakes 2023. The tents are so close to the border they are almost touching it. Abu Ala' has buried his teenage daughter and son. Northern Syria.

Those living here on the Syrian side may have been displaced by the country's more than decade-old civil war. But they could also be survivors of the earthquake. Catastrophes overlap in Syria.

The earthquake, untroubled by international borders, has brought havoc to both countries. But the international relief effort has been thwarted by checkpoints. In southern Turkey, thousands of rescue workers with heavy lifting gear, paramedics and sniffer dogs have jammed the streets, and are still working to find survivors. In this part of opposition-held north-west Syria, none of this is going on.

I had just crossed the border from four days in the city of Antakya, Turkey, where the aid response is a cacophony - ambulance sirens blare all night long, dozens of earth movers roar and rip apart concrete 24 hours a day.

Among the olive groves in the village of Bsania, in Syria's Idlib province, there's mostly silence. crying

From CNN's l. US Ambassador to UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield on Sunday urged the UN Security Council to approve two additional access points to deliver aid to parts of Syria hit by the deadly quake.

"People in the affected areas are counting on us. They are appealing to our common humanity to help in their moment of need," Thomas-Greenfield said "We cannot let them down — we must immediately resolution to heed the UN’s call for authorization of additional border crossings for the delivery of humanitarian assistance. We have the power to act. It's time to move with urgency and purpose.

"The delivery of urgent supplies to quake-hit areas of northern Syria has be complicated by long-running civil war between opposition forces and the Syrian army, led by President Bashar al-Assad, who is accused of killing his own people.

Russia, which backs Assad's regime, has previously blocked approval for another aid route to Syria at the UN.

The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator on Sunday stressed the need to "open more access points" to get aid out quicker. Meanwhile, the head of the White Helmets volunteer group urged the UN to act outside the Security Council to open three crossings for emergency aid.
