U.S.A. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 2024

Fault Lines...The electorate is changing. Here’s what that means for Trump and Harris....CNN

There’s a reason Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are intensifying efforts to reach beyond their party’s traditional supporters in the final weeks of this razor-thin campaign.

Extending a pattern stretches back decades, White voters without college degree, cornerstone of modern GOP coalition declined by a little more than 2% as a share of eligible voters since 2020, falling below 40% of eligible voting pool for 1st time. A new analysis of latest Census Bureau data by demographer William Frey shared with CNN. While working-class Whites is shrinking Frey found both Whites with at least a 4-year college degree & voters of color have each increased since 2020 by about a single percentage point as a share of eligible voters. Those increases also continue long-term trends seen well educated Whites grow represent more than 1-in-4 eligible voters & people of color rise past 1-in-3.

Trends help explain why former president has devoted so much effort to reaching beyond his traditional base of White voters without a college education to attract more Black & Latino voters, especially men, in turn, trends help explain the emphasis vice president is placing on attracting more college-educated White voters who have previously leaned toward GOP — a priority she underscored by barnstorming across populous white-collar suburbs outside Philadelphia, Detroit & Milwaukee with GOP former Rep. Liz Cheney.

TEL AVIV: Israel on Tuesday confirmed it had killed Hashem Safieddine, the heir apparent to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah who was previously killed in an Israeli attack targeting the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group.

The military said Safieddine was killed in a strike carried out three weeks ago in Beirut's southern suburbs, its first confirmation of his death. Earlier this month, Israel said he had probably been eliminated. There was no immediate response from Hezbollah to Israel's statement that it had killed Safieddine.

Israel has been carrying out an escalating offensive in Lebanon after a year of border clashes with Hezbollah, the most formidably armed of Iran's proxy forces across the Middle East. The group has been acting in support of Palestinian militants fighting Israel in Gaza but is reeling from a spate of killings of its senior commanders in Israeli airstrikes in recent weeks.

A relative of Nasrallah, Safieddine was appointed to its Jihad Council - the body responsible for its military operations - and to its executive council, overseeing Hezbollah's financial and administrative affairs.

Hezbollah confirms death of Nasrallah's heir apparent

Safi al-Din looks deceptively similar to his cousin, from same style of beard, black turban, signaling ostensible descent from prophet Muhammad

Hailing from a Shia family of clerics in southern Lebanon, in youth Safi al-Din soon came under influence of infamous Imad Mughniyeh, one of Hezbollah’s founding members. Together with his cousin Nasrallah, Safi al-Din then set off for religious education in Shia holy places, first in Najaf in Iraq then in Iran’s holy city religious ctr of Qom, giving him first direct point of contact with Iranian regime, Hezbollah’s patron. 2-years after Nasrallah was appointed as successor of Abbas al-Musawi, who was killed by Israeli airstrike, he called his cousin back from Qom also was killed.

Kennedy signed a treaty banning atmospheric nuclear testing, setting the stage for the 1968 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which now has 191 members. The treaty’s five recognized nuclear-weapons states – the United States, the Soviet UnionBritainFrance, and China – pledged not to spread nuclear weapons, and its 186 other members pledged not to develop them. IsraelIndia, and Pakistan refused to sign the NPT and did develop nuclear weapons; North Korea signed the treaty but then withdrew to develop its nuclear program.
That brings the total of nuclear-armed states to nine, which is far from perfect, but much better than Kennedy predicted. Defenders of this imperfect regime argue that the rate of spread is as important as the number of states possessing the bomb, because greater predictability improves the prospect of maintaining stability. Already, Saudi Arabia has threatened to develop nuclear weapons if Iran does. If there are regional cascades of new nuclear-armed states, the probability of accidents and miscalculations would increase substantially.
The Counteroffensive: What the Trump shooting could mean for Ukraine

Haines explicitly mentioned Iran and North Korea. Both had been under United Nations sanctions in which China, Russia, and the West cooperated. Until recently, Russia had a long history of supporting non-proliferation. Not only did it sign the NPT, but it also adopted the 1978 Nuclear Suppliers Group Guidelines, under which vendors of civil nuclear equipment agreed to exercise prudence in their export policies. Now that Russian President Vladimir Putin is becoming dependent on North Korean military supplies to sustain his war in Ukraine, however, he has ended Russia’s cooperation on non-proliferation.
While Iran has long had a nuclear-weapons program based on enriched uranium, it has gone through fits and starts in response to external pressures. The regime has been careful to keep its production of highly enriched uranium below the threshold needed to produce a nuclear arsenal. But with Russia relying on Iranian drones, China relying on Iranian oil, and former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump having foolishly scrapped the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, international cooperation on non-proliferation has broken down here, too.
Moreover, some believe (probably mistakenly) that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if the Ukrainians had kept the nuclear weapons that they inherited when the Soviet Union collapsed. If this assumption gains traction, the prospects for non-proliferation will worse

Can Kamala Harris beat Donald Trump? Latest poll updates. Here’s what the latest polls say about 2024 presidential election, from The Independent’s data correspondent minute ago.

Overall, race has only become tighter; with some new polls showing a thin Trump lead, outcome of the election is anyone’s game. In the seven swing states, neither candidate is more than a few points ahead & in Texas & Florida, new polls show Trump leading by under 10 points; yet in one red state, a key Republican senator is under threat from a Democrat contender. Several voter registration deadlines have come and gone, but in some states, it’s not too late to sign up to vote.

Who's ahead in the national polls?
Harris has a +1.7 point lead over Trump in an average of national polls. For latest polling analysis, click here.

It featured an array of women discussing their experiences with sexual who founded the #MeToo movement. “I figured time to share this, & I’m ready,” Williams (she said) on Zoom call thought of monster being back in White House is my absolute worst nightmare.” An interview with NBC News on Wed, she said her decision to come forward was not made in conjunction with the Democratic Party. Asked whether she had had any communications with Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, she said, “None whatsoever.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt flatly denied Williams’ allegation in a statement. “These accusations, made by a former activist for Barack Obama and announced on a Harris Campaign call two weeks before the election, are unequivocally false,” the statement said in part.
NBC News spoke to 7 people who they discussed allegations with Williams between 2006 & 2022. All of them said they found Williams & her claim to be credible, consistent & allegation was published in Guardian first broadcast by CNN.

Williams appears to be the first person to publicly allege sexual misconduct by Trump in which Epstein played a role. None of the dozens of women in Epstein’s orbit whom NBC News has interviewed over the last seven years have accused Trump of misconduct that involved Epstein. Epstein pled guilty in 2008 to a state charge of procuring a minor for prostitution and served time in jail in Florida. He died by suicide in 2019 in a federal jail in Manhattan as he awaited trial on charges of sex trafficking minors.

“I feel comfortable & ready to tell it,” Williams told NBC News, “& then I can handle the backlash.” Big Grin

How a Singaporean man allegedly stole US$230 million in cryptocurrency and what he spent it on
Singaporean Malone Lam, 20, has been charged in the US with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. Malone Lam, 20, has been charged in the United States with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money

laundering. Together with his co-conspirator, Jeandiel Serrano, they allegedly stole over 4,100 bitcoin – worth about US$230 million at the time – from victim in Washington scam was described as “one of the (largest cryptocurrency thefts) from a private individual in history of the United States” (lucky not happening in S'pore), prosecutors said .On Wednesday (Oct 23) morning Singapore time, Serrano appeared in court for a status hearing. The court heard that both the prosecution and defence were “seeking a resolution of this matter short of a trial”, court records showed.

They requested about 60 days to continue plea negotiations, will inform court if a deal is reached before the deadline. Court filings unsealed earlier this month detailed how Lam and Serrano allegedly carried out the scam and how
they spent money. (THE THEFT) Lam and his co-conspirator Serrano, 21, from Los Angeles, targeted the victim because they identified him as a “high-net-worth investor” from the early days of cryptocurrency. According to court documents, substantial planning went into the scam, with a co-conspirator causing “unauthorised Google account access” notifications to be sent to the victim in the week leading up to the theft.

This person used proxy virtual private network (VPN) services to make it appear as if the access attempts were coming from overseas – this laid down the groundwork for the theft through “sophisticated social engineering”. The court heard on Aug 18, Lam & accomplice called victim, pretending to be Google support team members. They there had been a hack attempt on his account & they needed to shut it down.

Lam found Gemini cryptocurrency exchange records in the victim’s Google accounts.

CNN data expert Harry Enten said that despite being a close race on the surface, there is a high chance that the election will actually end with the winner receiving over 300 Electoral College votes.

CNN host John Berman noted that the election seems "historically close," but asked, "What if it’s not?" He then turned to CNN senior political data reporter Enten to break down the numbers and observed, "As close as it is, and we do believe it‘s super close right now, that also means that if things change, even just a little bit, it‘s not really close."

"It isn’t," Enten agreed. "So we have been talking about the idea that there‘s going to be a historically close election. I think I might have said it on this particular program, but in fact — will the winner get at least 300 electoral votes? The answer is, majority [chance] yes."

Enten then produced electoral maps showing how either former President Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris could end up winning over 300 Electoral College votes.

Election 2024: Trump stumps in the Rust Belt; Harris campaigns with Michelle Obama. The former first lady argued former President Donald Trump would be a danger to women's health if he returned to office. What's happening on the campaign trail today

1) Vice President Kamala Harris stumped alongside former first lady Michelle Obama at a rally in Kalamazoo, Michigan, today. Obama, in her first campaign trail appearance this cycle, argued that there would be "dire consequences for the future of women's health" if former President Donald Trump returns to office.

2) Trump swung through the Rust Belt today, holding an event in Novi, Michigan, before he took the stage in State College, Pennsylvania.

3) Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris' running mate, spoke at a Native Americans for Harris-Walz get-out-the-vote event in Window Rock, Arizona, before giving remarks at a rally in Phoenix.

4) Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, also hit the campaign trail today, making stops in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Harris allies seek to keep the ‘Biden coalition’ in the fold. Mike Memoli

As President Joe Biden fought to remain in the presidential race this summer, advisers often argued there existed a “Biden coalition” — a cohort only the incumbent could hold together. With Vice President Kamala Harris atop the Democratic ticket, there has been a shift in the focus on these voters, like white working-class voters in places like Pennsylvania, seniors and union members.

A pro-Harris super PAC has been running a series of ads — in heavy rotation during the Major League Baseball playoffs — featuring testimonials from working-class voters, as well as voters who say they previously backed former President Donald Trump, that echo Biden’s message. A coalition of labor groups targeting union members in battleground states is pointing to Biden’s term in office. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has trained his sights on keeping voters who backed Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020 in the Democratic camp with a populist, progressive pitch that leans on Biden’s accomplishments.

As we’ve reported all cycle, Mr. Trump has made important gains among Black, Hispanic and younger voters, but it increasingly seems his gains will vary greatly from state to state or even city to city. Our recent poll of nearby Philadelphia, for instance, showed Ms. Harris doing just fine there (79-16).
Of course, there are many differences between the two cities, but they’ve voted very similarly for decades. Just a few years ago, no one would have guessed that New York and Philadelphia would part political ways. The polls suggests that something is driving them apart — or perhaps more accurately, drove them apart.
