What's happening on campaign trail today
Vice President Kamala Harris & her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, held their first sit-down interview since start of their campaign on CNN. Harris defended her economic policies, including those of the Biden administration, but promised to do more to improve affordability for middle-class Americans and to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet if she's elected.

Former President Donald Trump said in an interview with NBC News before his rally in Potterville, Michigan, that he would protect access to IVF treatments if elected.

Harris held a rally in Savannah, capping a two-day bus tour of southeastern Georgia. While she sees an opening in battleground state, Trump working hard to put it back in GOP column, even repairing his long-standing feud with the state's popular Republican governor.

Both running mates also hit the campaign trail. Walz spoke in Raleigh, North Carolina, while Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance addressed a convention of first responders in Boston, where he drew a mix of cheers & boos.

Trump to vote against Florida abortion measure after backlash. Donald Trump has said he will vote against a ballot measure in his home state of Florida that would protect abortion rights after facing backlash from conservative supporters.
The former president's announcement came one day after an NBC News interview in which he appeared to support the measure - a statement that caused anti-abortion activists to openly criticise him.

On Friday, Trump told Fox News that he still thinks Florida's ban on abortions after six weeks is too strict. However he said would still vote "no" on a measure that would amend the state's constitution to protect abortion rights.

Reproductive rights remain a central issue, with Harris slamming Trump on Friday for his opposition to a Florida abortion amendment. Access to fertility treatments emerged on Friday as a flashpoint in White House campaigns of Vice President Kamala Harris & former President Donald J. Trump as they entered Labor Day weekend, traditionally a start of the homestretch of America’s election calendar.

Democrats accused Mr. Trump of trying to distract from his role in helping to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022 with his proposal to require insurance companies or the federal government to pay for all costs associated with in vitro fertilization treatments.

Mr. Trump — who is struggling for women’s votes, according to polls — floated the plan during campaign stops on Thursday in Michigan and Wisconsin, though he offered few details.

The Harris campaign challenged Mr. Trump’s credibility on the issue of I.V.F., saying that the Republican Party’s official platform includes language that suggests that fertilized eggs should have personhood rights under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. The campaign said that it would embark on a bus tour to draw attention to Mr. Trump’s record on reproductive rights.

Senator Democrat of Massachusetts, speaking on a Zoom call on Friday organized by Harris campaign, said Mr. Trump’s overture to sway women voters was “smoke *& mirrors.” “he thinks women are stupid & we can be gaslighted,” she said. Senator JD Vance of Ohio, Mr. Trump’s running mate, dismissed questions on Friday about whether conservative courts and lawmakers could use the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe. to try to restrict access to in vitro fertilization treatments. “It’s such a ridiculous hypothetical,” he told CNN.

Praise for Biden: In her CNN interview on Thursday, Ms. Harris lavished compliments on the president and stood by her spirited defense of him after his disastrous debate performance in June. On Thursday, she enumerated Mr. Biden’s accomplishments and praised his “judgment and disposition,” calling him “quite selfless” and saying he “puts the American people first.”
Walz along for the ride: Republicans criticized Ms. Harris for bringing Mr. Walz to the interview, suggesting that she lacked the confidence to do a one-on-one interview. But the governor seemed to play a marginal role, with the interviewer, Dana Bash, ignoring him for long stretches, leaving him to nod along to Ms. Harris’s comments. He accomplished at least one goal: Don’t overshadow your running mate. 

Trump just spoke admiringly about conservative parent activists who have become active in school board politics nationwide around gender issues, sometimes disrupting meetings. While he is not speaking tonight in a detailed way about his policy proposals, his campaign has promised to defund schools that recognize transgender identities. He just said American children are going to school & coming home a few days later with a new gender. He spoke against transgender athletes and falsely claimed that an Olympic boxer underwent a gender transition, frequently brings up transgender athletes on trail, making jokes doing impressions that get big laughs at his rallies. His promise to keep transgender women from competing in women’s sports have become a standard part of his stump speech and consistently draws some of the loudest applause from his rally audiences

Late Saturday, the Trump campaign posted numerous videos in which family members of some of the 13 U.S. troops killed during a suicide bombing in the 2021 evacuation of Afghanistan accused President Joe Biden and Harris of killing their children by placing them in harm’s way. Where the race between Trump and Harris stands on Labor Day, according to our polling expert
A race that Kamala Harris leads nationally is the equivalent of a knife fight in a phone booth, and it’s set to be decided in a smaller-than-usual number of states. Labor Day is a critical mile-marker on the road to the general election, and Kamala Harris has reached it with a slim advantage over Donald Trump. But the former president would still be well within striking distance if the election were held today.

Because of Republicans’ advantage in the Electoral College, a race that Harris leads nationally by between 2 and 4 percentage points, on average, is the equivalent of a knife fight in a phone booth, and it’s set to be decided in a smaller-than-usual number of states. Polls are extraordinarily tight in all of them, and that isn’t expected to change much over the next nine weeks. In modern presidential elections, where the race stands on Labor Day is usually pretty close to where it ends up once the votes are counted.

Of seven states, both campaigns have identified as the core Electoral College battlegrounds, Harris leads Trump in three of them — the “Blue Wall” states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — according to multiple polling averages. Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign held a string of Labor Day-themed events in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania on Monday, marking the unofficial launch of the fall campaign sprint in the states that will determine the Nov election.
Events come as Harris seeks to extend her momentum over the next two months. While the Democratic presidential nominee has sought to expand the map of states where she is competitive, Labor Day stops point importance of winning those three “blue wall” states that propelled President Joe Biden to victory in 2020.

Biden joined Harris for a rally in Pittsburgh on Monday evening, the president’s first joint campaign appearance with the vice president since ending his reelection bid and endorsing her.
