US Missiles in Germany Mark Return of Cold War
#1

The White House announced the decision on Wednesday (10/7/2024) at a NATO summit in Washington, stating that the deployment of long-range weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, in Europe serves as a deterrent.

The US says episodic deployment of long-range missiles to Germany will begin in 2026, with plans for permanent deployment in the future. "Exercising these advanced capabilities demonstrates the U.S. commitment to NATO and its contribution to Europe's integrated deterrence," the White House said in a joint statement with the German government.

The deployment of US missiles in Germany brings back painful memories of the Cold War, when the deployment of Pershing II ballistic missiles in West Germany in the 1980s sparked widespread protests.
