Chinese embassy rebukes Straits Times commentary on UNC3886, calls for evidence

The Chinese Embassy in Singapore, through a letter by First Secretary Song Chao published in The Straits Times forum on 5 August, has criticised a commentary linking cyber threat group UNC3886 to China, insisting that denials alone are insufficient and urging Singapore to provide concrete evidence.

UNCxxxx is a name signed by a US-based cybersecurity company Mandiant created by Kevin Mandia in 2004, a former US military officer.

His coy wasn't doing great until he decided to turn his little enterprise into a IT coy selling APT actors allegedly from Russia, N Korea, Iran and yes China....That turn out to be great business move. As any business-minded folks would do, he quickly sold Mandiant in 2014 at $1 billion in the same year Mandiant made headlines about alleged hacking from China's "Unit 61398"....Interestingly, 2013 is a year after Snowden exposed America's own massive hacking operation.  Big Grin

After working up his company mergers and marketing himself up in the food chain in the cybersecurity industry , Mandiant CEO finally quit when Google bought it for over $5 bilion in 2022...Of course both Google Inc and Madiant has offices in SG... Big Grin

Cyber-security firm Mandiant first detected the Chinese espionage group in 2022. UNC3886 is said to have targeted prominent strategic organisations – including those in the defence, technology and telecommunication sectors – on a global scale.

There is nothing to rebuke as ST did not said China was responsible. The word “China” was mentioned twice and “Chinese” was mentioned once in the news report.  When “China” was mentioned,  ST referred to what Mediant’s reported. The term “Chinese” is a common nouce,  it can be referring to National Chinese,  Malaysian or SG Chinese.

This Unusual -- for SG gov remain silence after PRC asked it to provide the evidence in b/w as requested by the Chinese Embassy in its Letter

If the Singaporean side has concrete evidence pointing to China’s linkage with these cyber threat groups, please provide it to us through appropriate channels. We will handle it in accordance with the law.

The Chinese is very specific in its rebuke - It is referring to the ST reporter writing which is loaded with innuendos based on "claims" from a Google-owned coy.
By playing dumb like revealer  does with "Chinese" is not going help ST credibility when all Shanmugam did was point fingers at "UNC3886" not China.  Big Grin
The last paragraph in the embassy Letter essentially questioned Strait Time's editorial objectivity..

What we need in addressing cyber threats is solidarity and cooperation, not mutual accusations. We hope that The Straits Times will objectively reflect the contents of this report in its future coverage.

A fact is a fact. If Mediant has a public report,  anyone can quote it.  U can blame ST is not sensitive but u can’t rebuke anything factual unless u dun know and can’t differentiate what is a fact what is not a fact. China Embassy should just say China has nothing to do with UNC 3886 and blame ST for not been sensitive to quote China.  It is then up to the readers to judge.

As a newspaper,  their job is to report the news factually.  If they reported the fact wrongly, u  rebuke.
