Druze community: Historically concentrated in southern Syria's Suwayda & surrounding areas of Jabal al-Druze, long wary of external threats. While small Druze communities exist near Golan Heights, they are part of larger network of Druze populations spread across Syria & Lebanon. The Druze, like Kurds or the Yazidis, are unique ethnic minority in Middle East who follow Druze faith, which incorporates tenets of Islam, Hinduism & even classical Greek philosophy in its religion. Many were serving either in army or local security units, they suffered a massacre at hands of ISIS. They suffered after war due to neglect, continued controversy regarding former regime's attempts to restore authority over Suwayda.

Syrian forces deployed in Jaramana to end unrest

Our forces begun deploying in Jaramana after those involved in assassination of Ahmed Al-Khatib. Defence Ministry employee, refused to surrender,” Lieutenant Colonel Hussam al-Tahan told state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Al-Tahan added that the operation aims to dismantle illegal checkpoints operated by armed groups accused of kidnapping, murder and armed robbery. Calm had begun to return after negotiations between Ministry of Interior forces and local leaders, Al Jazeera Arabic reported.
Jaramana, a densely populated suburb, is predominantly inhabited by Druze and Christian communities. The Druze live mainly in Lebanon, Syria and Israel.

Syrian Forces Deployed in Majority-Druse Town After Clash.

An uneasy calm prevailed in the town on the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday, two days after a gunfight between local men and security forces.
Syrian security forces were deployed across a predominately Druse town on the outskirts of Damascus, the capital, early Sunday, two days after a gunfight between government officers and armed men from a local neighborhood left one person dead and several others wounded. A tense calm has returned to the town, Jaramana, after the deadly clash Friday night between the security forces of Syria’s new government and the Druse, a religious minority. The person killed was a security officer, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which added that nine other people were wounded. Druse spiritual leaders blamed the killing on “an undisciplined mob that does not belong to our customs, nor to our known monotheistic traditions or customs.”

Israeli army statement on Monday said that its forces “struck a military site where weapons belonging to the previous Syrian regime were stored in the area of Qardaha”, the hometown of deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, some 60km (37 miles) north of the Tartous port.

In the wake of the lightning opposition offensive last December that toppled Syria’s longtime leader al-Assad, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes on Syrian military assets in what it said was a bid to prevent them from falling into hostile hands. Last Tuesday, the Israeli army said it carried out air strikes targeting military sites containing weapons in southern Syria, just days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for demilitarising the area.

Israel has moved forces into a United Nations-monitored demilitarised zone within Syria after al-Assad’s removal, a move that violated the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria. Israel has also taken control of areas outside of the buffer zone, including Mount Hermon, and has conducted repeated bombing raids on military sites.

Last week at Syria’s national dialogue conference participants affirmed their rejection of “provocative” statements by Netanyahu and urged the international community to pressure Israel to stop any “aggression and violations”, condemning “the Israeli incursion into Syrian territory”. The conference also opposed Israel’s attempts to stoke sectarian tensions by indicating it was willing to protect Syria’s minority Druze community, many of whom live in the south of the country.

CNN: Worst outbreak of unrest in Syria’s transitional govt, hundreds of people been killed or wounded, clashes between security forces vs supporters of former President Bashar al Assad this week, according to residents, it broke out Thursday in Latakia & Tartous regions on the Mediterranean coast, areas where support among Syrian Alawites for Assad was strong and which has seen outbreaks of sectarian violence over the past 3-mths. More than 225 people have been killed since Thursday clashes, the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said on Friday.

At least 100 Syrian govt “security personnel” are included in death toll, UK-based independent human rights monitoring group said,125 civilians were killed, joint forces from Syria’s Ministries of Defense & Interior “launched a large-scale security op in dozens of villages across countryside of Latakia, Tartous, and Hama.”

CNN cannot independently verify SNHR’s figures and is reaching out to the Syrian government for comment regarding the death toll. Assad family, members of the minority Alawite sect, ruled Syria for over half a century until Assad was ousted late last year by Sunni Islamist militants who sought to reshape the country’s political and sectarian order.
Syria’s Alawites – some 10% of the population – were prominent in the Assad regime, and while many Alawites have surrendered their weapons since December, many others have not. Latest surge in violence highlights challenges for Syria’s new regime face, appeasing disenfranchised groups, especially those that remain heavily armed. Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, vowed in a tv speech on Friday to pursue those responsible killing dozens security personnel. He urged security forces to “ensure no excessive or unjustified responses occur” following reports of many civilian casualties during clashes.

There is a shifting alliances in Syria – exemplified by recent agreement between Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) & Syrian govt – confirm that Ocalan’s message is not isolated or purely domestic this can offers a crucial opportunity that can redefine everything from Syria security policies to future positioning of Kurdish actors, shaping next phase of regional power dynamics.

Ocalan, in delivered from a Turkish prison in February, called on PKK to “convene your congress make a decision. All groups must lay down their weapons & PKK should dissolve itself. PKK leadership – from its longstanding command centre in Iraq’s Qandil Mountains – responded to Ocalan’s call by declaring a unilateral ceasefire with final disbandment as well as decisions on disarmament & delayed until congress can be held in a month or two.

Turkiye remains firm in its demand that all PKK-affiliated groups, including its Syrian offshoots???. Syria not bro to Turk people's. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said must disband unconditionally. Tongue

Syrian govt reaches deal with Kurdish-led SDF to integrate north-east region. Agreement recognises Kurdish rights as president Ahmed al-Sharaa seeks to achieve nationwide ceasefire, govt has reached a deal with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) controls north-east of the country to integrate the group into national army & achieve a nationwide ceasefire. Agreement will place north-east under Syrian govt for first time since Kurdish-led authority gained autonomy of the region in 2012 during civil war. Deal, will carried out by year’s end, place all public institutions in north-east Syria – including borders, airports & oilfields – under Syrian government control.

The deal will also recognise Kurdish rights – long denied under Assad regime, that banned Kurdish language from schools & prohibited Kurdish holidays. Text of agreement also said all Syrians would be able to participate in new political process, regardless of religious or ethnic background, is major breakthrough for Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who early on engaged SDF in negotiations to consolidate Syrian govt control over the country. It resolved an open question about what would happen to SDF after the ousting of Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, on 8 December by a rebel coalition led by Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

Turkish-backed rebel groups, now part of the Syrian army, had been engaged in near-daily clashes with the SDF since the toppling of the Assad regime until the announcement of deal, as agreement prompted cheering crowds to take to the street in Raqqa, north-east Syria & in Damascus.

The agreement came just after Syrian defence ministry announced the end of its military operation against Assad loyalists in Syrian coast. Combat had started after fighters loyal to the ousted Assad regime launched a coordinated attack on Syrian security forces across the coast on Thursday fighting triggered a 5-day battle in north-west Syria that killed more than 1,000 people, including at least 745 civilians, attack also triggered revenge killings of mostly Alawite civilians in villages across the north-west.
