Even the Iran began to evacuate its military commanders and personnel from Syria on Friday, according to regional officials and three Iranian officials, in a sign of Iran’s inability to help keep President Bashar al-Assad in power as he faces a resurgent rebel offensive. Among those evacuated to neighboring Iraq and Lebanon were top commanders of Iran’s powerful Quds Forces, the external branch of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, the officials said.
The move signaled a remarkable turn for Mr. al-Assad, whose government Iran has backed throughout Syria’s 13-year civil war, and for Iran, which has used Syria as a key route to supply weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Guards personnel, some Iranian diplomatic staff, their families, and Iranian civilians were also being evacuated, according to the Iranian officials, two of them members of the Guards, and regional officials. Iranians began to leave Syria on Friday morning, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue.

Syrian Rebels Seize Control of Deir Ezzor as Assad Troops Withdraw. Dec 06, 2024. The U.S.-backed Syrian rebel forces have seized the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor in the latest setback for President Bashar al-Assad. Iran-backed Syrian govt forces are now withdrawing from thah area, Reuters reports.
"Syrian forces and their Iran-backed allies completely withdrew from areas they control in Deir Ezzor province and Kurdish forces are advancing towards their areas," said Rami Abdel Rahman, who leads the war watchdog group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The rebels, led by insurgent group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), are also advancing on country's 3rd-largest city, Hom, one day after they seized control of Hama, Syria's 4th-largest city. HTS, which has been at the forefront of the assault, has vowed to march south toward Homs & ultimately Damascus, Assad's seat of power.

Decades ago...the U.S. military directly fired on Russian forces after the U.S.A. American airstrike on column of purported Wagner fighters,5th Assault Corps fighters & other pro-Assad force.
U.S. officials later said, it wasn’t the first Russian-American firefight in Syria and casualties in Deir Ezzor have reached as high as 200.
News accounts placed the total number of Russians killed in action at more than 100 people. Kremlin initially claimed none of its citizens were present but Russian-language social media told a different story.
Several user groups, or “clubs,” popular with Russian mercenaries, wannabes, and military veterans on the popular Russian-based social media platform Vkontakte began pinging their members for information about what they may have heard about the battle thousands of miles away in Syria.
Vkontakte buzzed with rumors after Igor “Strelkov” (aka Igor Girkin), a former Russian special forces operator with Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB6, and pro-Russian separatist leader who fought in Ukraine, indicated death toll might be as high as 600 fighters.
Since by then it was widely known that Strelkov-Girkin had led advance reconnaissance teams for Russia in Crimea & served as chief of security for Russian oligarch Konstanin Malofeev, a key financier of Russian irregulars, the high-casualty claims stuck. Investigative journalists later confirmed the identities of several Russian citizens whose names appeared on a leaked casualties list, and Kremlin reversed its denials.
This pitched battle in Deir Ezzor on line of de-confliction between U.S.A. backed Syrian Defense Forces (SDF) & Russian-backed paramilitaries is illustrative of potential (another miscalculation) in proxy war and escalation risks by Putin

UK could remove Syrian rebel group from terror list...UK govt could remove Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from the list of banned terrorist groups after the rebels led overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Cabinet minister Pat McFadden told BBC the situation in the country was "very fluid" & if it stabilised any change in the ban would be a "relatively swift decision".
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) was proscribed as a terror organisation in the UK after being added as an alias of al-Qaeda in 2017. McFadden confirmed UK currently cannot have any communications with HTS. The minister's comments come after PM Sir Keir Starmer welcomed the end of rule of al-Assad was overthrown, reported to have fled to Russia. Now HTS & allied rebel factions seized control Syrian capital Damascus. Sunday after years of civil war.
Under Terrorism Act 2000, home secretary may proscribe an organisation if believe it commits or participates in, prepares for, promotes or encourages, or is otherwise concerned in terrorism, if its proportionate to do so. Its a criminal offence to join a group on the list, also against law to arrange a meeting if it is to support the activities of a proscribed organisation.
- HTS's leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, now started using his real name, Ahmed al-Sharaa, cut ties with al-Qaeda in 2016. He recently pledged tolerance for different religious groups communities.

Israel, US and Turkey launch strikes to protect interests in Syria. Bombing raids have hit sites across Syria as regional actors in the Middle East scrambled to defend their interests in Syria after the sudden fall of the country’s dictator, Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Moscow on Sunday.
As rebels led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) freed regime prisoners, including from the notorious Sednaya jail – often referred to as the “human slaughterhouse”, Israel, Turkey and the US carried out military action as Assad’s former backers in Russia and Iran also engaged in efforts to shape a future Syria.

21m ago (14:00 GMT)...HTS trying to chart ‘different course’, should ‘be judged by actions’: Germany..Germany’s Federal Foreign Office has acknowledged that HTS will “certainly play a role in the future of Syria”. Speaking at a news conference, spokesman Sebastian Fischer noted concerns about HTS’s past links to al-Qaeda, which it split from in 2017, and alleged antidemocratic practices in its stronghold of Idlib.
The group, however, “has tried in recent months and years to distance itself from its jihadist origins and also to build up civil structures”, he said. How seriously this new direction could be taken would depend on how HTS “deals with civilians and, in particular, minorities in the area they now control”, Fischer said. “Ultimately, HTS must be judged by its actions,” he said

Since autumn 2024, customs dept of Russia’s eastern city of Vladivostok has re-categorized furniture sliding rail components as bearing types, resulting in a drastic increase in tariffs from zero to 55.65%. City now handles 90% of China’s furniture imports into Russia. Forbes 1st reported protectionist move Nov 26. Russian media widely cited Nov 27. Sergey Zmievsky, president of Almaz, a Russian furniture company, told Forbes account for 30% of the costs of making kitchen furniture.
Association of Furniture Enterprises of Russia (AMDPR) said new tariff would bankrupt Russian importers of furniture components and create an additional 15% cost for local furniture makers.
AMDPR president Alexander Shestakov said importing a finished furniture, only subject to a 9-12% tariff, now more profitable than producing it domestically. He targeted components currently not produced in Russia, imports about US$1.3b

March 8th, a former U.S. Marine Smothers read a Forbes about a new experimental Russian FPV drone communicated with operator via a fiber optic cable rather than radio. It impossible to jam. Smothers hit to Ukraine via his Drone Reaper website immediately realized Ukrainian forces needed,” he fiber optic drones could be a game changer — but Russians had them. He took on the mission of ensuring Ukraine would field its own unjammable drones with more systems packed along front. FPVs launched by Ukraine were downed by jamming. So Ukrainian stopped trying to fly FPV attacks to protected positions, they ran into a wall of jamming. But a fiber optic FPV completely negate this type of protection.
Smothers set about building fiber optic drone. 3-mths prototype headed to Ukraine, a missionary on mission: from Shelf On To the Battlefield, knew Ukraine needed a low-cost solution. FPV drones typically cost $500. Ukrainians needed affordable solutions original design used about $360. FPV drone into an unjammable fiber-optic. Krab Tech helped design was battle ready. He set for Ukraine Aid Op, Tech United (who helped develop drone) & Defense Tech For Ukraine to govt’s Brave1 defense technology accelerator, military drone Special Detachment drone makers like Wild Hornets, Vyriy & Dronarnia, right up to state-run Ukroboronprom, by sharing his designs providing basic hardware, Smothers encouraged everyone to try converting their own FPVs into fiber drones. Only thing he was selling was idea. He stresses that the whole project was very much a team effort. Fiber FPV into action for 1st time, drone performed as flawlessly as demo completely unaffected by jammers, FPV sent back a clear signal right up to the point of impact.
“There a great roar when it hit,” says Smothers. “And I had a feeling of accomplishment."
