Hezbollah Threat Looms Over Northern Israel

Sarit Zehavi, a former Israeli military intelligence analyst, gestures across verdant valley on the horizon some nine kilometers to north. Just beyond clusters of villages tdot the mountainous region—home to Jews, Arabs, Christians, and Druze lies Israel’s northern border with Lebanon.

On the other side lies one of Israel’s most powerful foes: Hezbollah, the most heavily armed non-state actor in the world. Financed, equipped, and trained by Iran, group has a vast arsenal of rockets and missiles, including anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missiles, as well as advanced cyber-capabilities.

Since Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas’s ally Hezbollah has launched many hundreds of mortar, missile, and rocket attacks into Israel in near-daily clashes with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The Israel responded with nearly 4,000 strikes of its own, mostly with artillery and missiles, between October 2023 to March of this year, according to Armed Conflict Location. Event Data Project, it is an often overlooked front that many fear still has potential to spiral into a catastrophic new war that could quickly engulf the region.

Biden unveils Israeli proposal to end Gaza war
Joe Biden has urged Hamas to accept a new Israeli proposal to end the conflict in Gaza, saying that "it's time for this war to end".

The three-part proposal would begin with a 6week ceasefire in which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would withdraw from populated areas of Gaza.

There would also be a "surge" of humanitarian aid, as well as an exchange of some hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

The deal would eventually lead to a permanent "cessation of hostilities" and a major reconstruction plan for Gaza.

Hamas said it views the proposal "positively".
Speaking at the White House on Friday, Mr Biden said that the first phase of the proposed plan would include a "full and complete ceasefire", the withdrawal of IDF forces from populated areas and the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

"This is truly a decisive moment," he said. "Hamas says it wants a ceasefire. This deal is an opportunity to prove whether they really mean it."
The ceasefire, he added, would allow more humanitarian aid to reach the beleaguered territory, with "600 trucks carrying aid into Gaza every single day".

The second phase would see all remaining living hostages returned, including male soldiers. The ceasefire would then become "the cessation of hostilities, permanently." Among those who have urged Hamas to agree to the proposal was UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, who said on X that the group "must accept this deal so we can see a stop in the fighting".

"We’ve long argued a stop in the fighting can be turned into a permanent peace if we are all prepared to take the right steps," Lord Cameron added. "Let’s seize this moment and bring this conflict to an end."

Israel’s Defense Ministry on Tuesday officially signed a deal with the United States to procure a third F-35 fighter jet squadron.

The ministry said a delegation to the US signed a letter of agreement for the $3 billion deal that included 25 advanced stealth fighters built by Lockheed Martin.

The planes would begin to be delivered starting in 2028, in batches of three to five per year, the ministry said. The aircraft would bring the Israeli Air Force’s F-35I fleet to 75 in the coming years. Only 39 of Israel’s original order of 50 F-35s have so far been delivered.

The deal totals some $3 billion, financed by US military aid to Israel, the ministry said.

PM Benjamin Netanyahu set to address US Congress on July 24th 2024.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Israeli PMi Benjamin Netanyahu is set to address a joint meeting of Congress on July 24, setting the stage for what is expected to be a contentious speech at a crucial moment for the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Congressional leaders confirmed the date of the address late Thursday after formally inviting Netanyahu to come speak before lawmakers last week. It is the most recent show of wartime support for the longtime ally despite mounting political divisions over Israel’s military assault on Hamas in Gaza.

“The existential challenges we face, including the growing partnership between Iran & their backer, Russia, and China, threaten the security, peace, and prosperity of our countries and of free people around the world,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, along with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, said in the letter.

“To build on our enduring relationship to highlight America’s solidarity with Israel, we invite you to share the Israeli govt’s vision for defending democracy, combatting terror, and establishing a just and lasting peace in the region.”

As Netanyahu’s appearance before a growingly divided Congress is sure to be contentious and met with plenty of protests both inside the Capitol from lawmakers and outside by pro-Palestinian protesters. And it will put on stark display the growing election-year divisions among Democrats over the prime minister’s prosecution of the monthslong war against Hamas group.

How Iran Exports its Ideology.
We shall export our revolution to the whole world. Until the cry, ‘there is no god but God’ resounds over the whole world, there will be struggle. Iran has pursued a 2-pronged approach, encompassing hard & soft power strategies, in order to spread its brand of Islamic fundamentalist ideology throughout Middle East & beyond. In hard power, Iran offered financial, ideological, & material support for global terrorist proxies loyal to Iran’s.

Gunmen took around 250 hostages back to Gaza on Oct 7, more than 100 of whom were released in exchange for about 240 Palestinians held in Israeli jails during a week-long truce in November. There are 116 hostages left in the coastal enclave, according to Israeli tallies, including at least 40 whom Israeli authorities have declared dead in absentia.

The spokesperson for Hamas' armed al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Ubaida, said some hostages were killed during the rescue operation. Hamas had earlier said it still held a large number of hostages.
Attempts by the United States and regional countries to forge a deal that would release all remaining hostages in return for a ceasefire have repeatedly failed as Israel presses its assault in Gaza. Fresh airstrikes in the southern city of Rafah hit homes later on Saturday, residents and Hamas officials said.

Hamas' raid killed some 1,200 people, according to Israeli authorities, and Israel's subsequent bombardment and invasion of Gaza has killed at least 36,801 Palestinians, according to an updated tally by the territory's health ministry on Saturday.

Citing unnamed American and Israeli officials briefed on the matter, The New York Times reported that a team of American officials in Israel helped the operation by “providing intelligence and other logistical support.” The Israel Defense Forces later Saturday released footage of all four hostages reuniting with members of their families at Ramat Gan’s Sheba Medical Center.

It was the third successful operation of its kind since October 7. The first was the rescue of soldier Ori Megidish in late October. Intelligence provided by the United States helped Israel carry out the successful mission to rescue four hostages from the Gaza Strip over the weekend, according to a Saturday report. Citing unnamed American & Israeli briefed on matter, New York Times reported a team of American officials in Israel helped operation by “providing intelligence & other logistical support.”

Noa Argamani, 26, Almog Meir Jan, 21, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 40, had been abducted from the Supernova music festival near the Re’im kibbutz on the morning of October 7, when some 3,000 Hamas-led terrorists killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages in a murderous rampage in southern Israel.

In a daytime operation, Argamani was rescued from one site in Gaza’s Nuseirat camp on Saturday, while Meir Jan, Kozlov, and Ziv were rescued together from another nearby building.

A senior Israeli defense official with details of hostage rescue efforts was quoted as saying that intelligence collecting and analysis teams from US & UK have been in Israel during war helping their counterparts to gather and process information about hostages. Israeli said the US & British teams did not take part in planning hostage rescue operations. However, Israeli & US officials said supplementary intelligence they provided was valuable.

Report, Pentagon & CIA have been supplying Israel with intelligence gleaned from drone flights over Gaza, intercepted communications, & other sources. Israeli said US & Britain have been able to provide intelligence from flights, as well as from cyberspace, Israel is not able to obtain by itself. US officials have said that the intelligence focuses on locating the hostages & senior Hamas leaders, report said, Washington believes that the best way to convince Israel to end war is by securing freedom for hostages, either killing or capturing Hamas’s leadership.

Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, in a hint at American assistance, said in a statement about the recent successful rescue: “The United States is supporting all efforts to secure the release of hostages still held by Hamas, including American citizens. This includes through ongoing negotiations or other means.”

He also stressed that a current proposal for a hostage release in return for a truce “would secure the release of all the remaining hostages together with security assurances for Israel and relief for the innocent civilians in Gaza.”

The hostages rescued Saturday, who had been in Hamas captivity for eight months, were all in good condition, according to initial medical assessments. They were taken by helicopters from the Strip to hospitals in Israel for further evaluation. The Israel Defense Forces later Saturday released footage of all four hostages reuniting with members of their families at Ramat Gan’s Sheba Medical Center.

It was 3rd successful operation of its kind since Oct 7. First was rescue of soldier Ori Megidish in late Oct. In early Dec, IDF attempted to rescue another hostage, but he was killed. in February, hostages Fernando Marman, 61, & Louis Har, 70, were rescued from southern Gaza’s Rafah.

All of hostages rescued by IDF from Gaza, including four on Saturday, were saved from buildings & not tunnels. Rescued hostage Almog Meir Jan raises his hands in celebration as he is escorted from IDF helicopter on arrival at Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, June 8, 2024.

Following Saturday’s rescue, 116 of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 still remain in Gaza, though dozens of them are thought to be dead. A weeklong truce in late November saw 105 civilians released from Hamas captivity and four hostages were released before that.

In all, seven hostages have been rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 19 hostages have been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the military. IDF has confirmed the deaths of 41 of those still held by Hamas, citing new intelligence findings obtained by troops operating in Gaza. Shlomi Ziv embraces a soldier as he lands in Israel after being rescued from Hamas captivity, June 8, 2024.
