KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel said Tuesday that its ground forces were battling Hamas fighters deep inside Gaza’s largest city, signaling a major new stage in the month-old conflict, and its leaders foresee controlling the enclave’s security after the war.

The push into Gaza City guarantees that the already staggering death toll will rise further, while comments from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about controlling Gaza’s security for “an indefinite period” pointed to the uncertain endgame of a war that Israel says will be long and difficult.

Israeli ground troops has battled Hamas militants inside Gaza for week?, cutting territory into Gross half and encircling Gaza City.

US on Wednesday, for the second time in recent weeks, carried out strikes against a weapon storage facility in eastern Syria that the Pentagon said was used by Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated groups.

Tensions soar over Israel-Hamas conflict, US and coalition troops have been attacked at least 40 times in Iraq and Syria by Iran-backed forces since start of last month. Forty-five US troops have sustained traumatic brain injuries or minor wounds. The strikes were conducted by two F-15 jets and were in response to the recent attacks against US forces, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

Hezbollah is a Shia Muslim organisation which is politically influential and in control of the most powerful armed force in Lebanon. It established in early 1980s. It region's most dominant Shia power, Iran, to oppose Israel. At the time, Israel's forces had occupied southern Lebanon, during the country's civil war.

Hezbollah has participated in national elections since 1992 and has become a major political presence in southern part of Lebanon.

Its armed wing has carried out deadly attacks on Israeli and US forces in Lebanon. When Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah took credit for pushing them out.

Aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) is approaching the Persian Gulf as of Thursday and its escorts were spotted outside Strait of Hormuz in Gulf of Oman, said ship spotters. If strike group passes through Strait of Hormuz it would be the first time a U.S. aircraft carrier sails in the Persian Gulf since USS Nimitz in late 2020.

The Ike CSG deployed on Oct. 14, from Naval Station Norfolk strike group was initially going to take up station in the Mediterranean Sea and relieve USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), but was instead routed to U.S. Central Command following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in southern Israel. Ike transited Suez Canal on Nov. 4 into Red Sea and transited the Bab el Mandeb into the Gulf of Aden over the weekend.

As of Thursday, Ford and its escorts had moved west from their previous position off coast of Israel to south of Crete, said ship spotters. As of Sunday, Ford strike group will have been deployed for 200 days after extensions signed by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

Overall, the U.S. naval build-up consists of the two carrier strike groups, the three-ship Bataan Amphibious Ready Group with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit embarked and several guided-missile destroyers. USS Bataan (LHD-5) and USS Carter Hall (LSD-50) are operating in the northern portion of the Red Sea, while USS Mesa Verde (LPD-19) is in the Eastern Mediterranean along with the command ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20).

Additionally, the Pentagon widely broadcast the Nov. 5th transit of the nuclear guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN-728). There are some number of U.S. attack submarines in the region, but the Defense Department does not typically disclose their locations.

Naval buildup is part of the U.S. effort to keep the current conflict in southern Israel and Gaza Hamas contained. As of Thursday, there have been 57 attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria. (On Wed,) USS Thomas Hudner (DDG-116) shot down a drone launched from Yemen, according to a statement from U.S. 5th Fleet.

Myanmar Civil Society, Burmanization, and the Bars and Coffee Shops of Thailand. Under the neon lights of bars and coffee houses of Chiang Mai, Mae Sot and Bangkok, people, with pitchers of beer or coffee, are popping off in English or Burmese about how “key stakeholders” and other civil society or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are doing wrong.

They excitedly assert narratives about how to fix Myanmar by developing short and long-term projects through potential entry points. The drinkers of course are the CSO (civil society organization) and NGO elites, who dream of a modern Myanmar, and creating a civil society based on “global best practices.” They would use “good governance” principles developed by the world’s greatest institutions in Geneva, New York, Rome, London, Uppsala and Tokyo.

UN Sustainable Development Goals are acknowledged, and the need for Myanmar to be inclusive of youth, women, ethnicity, disabilities, sexuality and religion; at least for the time-being the seemingly cooperative military would be ignored. But this is not that new. The problem is that it is the same conversation heard in Yangon’s tea shops and bars before 2021 where favor and financial advantages were dispensed from the deep pockets of the donors from the embassies UN agencies known as Peaceland. It did not work well then, so why should it now?

This “we-know-best” narrative developed in the tea houses of downtown Yangon, encouraged by the Thein Sein government in 2010-2015, and the NLD government which held a modicum of power from 2016-2021. Such tea house conversations became the place where international assistance funds were injected into Myanmar for ceasefires and the countering of ultra-Buddhist nationalism of everybody except the Tatmadaw (Myanmar’s military).

The wealthy international donors deemed Myanmar as beginning a new democratic dawn, and therefore best practices borrowed from the West were needed to expand the civic space and establish peace. That dream of course was squashed by the coup of Feb. 1, 2021 and subsequent brutal military crackdown.

The generals had never really forgotten the habits of military repression and nationalism that supported Burmanization and had been cultivated since 1962.
