CNN: In the month since the US launched a major military campaign targeting the Houthi rebel group in Yemen, the militants have successfully shot down at least seven multi-million-dollar American drones, hindering the US’ ability to move into “phase two” of the operation, multiple US officials familiar with the matter told CNN.
The US was hoping to achieve air superiority over Yemen within 30 days, officials said and degrade Houthi air defense systems enough to begin a new phase focusing on ramping up intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance of senior Houthi leaders in order to target and kill them, the officials said.

The wreckage of a GBU-53/B StormBreaker glide bomb, also known as the Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II), has appeared in Yemen. The weapon, which was only recently confirmed as being used in combat in that country, offers some very advanced capabilities, especially over the previous GBU-39/B SDB I. It is set to become one of America’s most important and widely employed weapons, across its own aerial fleets and many of its allies. With that in mind, the technological risk of the remains of this still near-completely intact weapon falling into an adversary’s hands is significant.

Dozens of African migrants killed by US strike. Yemen Houthis say minutes ago
Reuters Rescuers carry an injured migrant after a strike on a detention centre, in Saada, Yemen (28 April 2025) At least 68 African migrants have been killed in a US air strike on a detention centre in Houthi-controlled north-western Yemen, the armed group's TV channel says. Al Masirah reported that another 47 migrant injured, most critically. Saada province was bomb. It footage showing multiple bodies covered in rubble of a destroyed building, no immediate comment from US military.
But hours after US Central Command announced US forces hit more than 800 targets since Trump order intensification of air campaign against Houthis 15 March. It strikes had "killed hundreds of Houthi fighters, numerous Houthi leaders", including senior officials overseeing missile & drone programmes.
Houthi-run authorities have said the strikes have killed dozens of civilians, but they have reported few casualties among the group's members. The migrant detention centre in Saada was reportedly holding 115 Africans when it was hit on Sunday night.
Despite the humanitarian crisis in Yemen caused by 11 years of conflict, migrants continue to arrive in the country by boat from the Horn of Africa. Instead, they face exploitation, detention, violence and dangerous journeys through active conflict zones, according to International Organization of Migration (IOM). In 2024 almost 60,900 migrants arrived in country, often with no means to survive.
Earlier this month, the Houthi-run government said a series of US air strikes on the Ras Isa oil terminal on the Red Sea coast killed at least 74 people and wounded 171 others. It said the terminal was a civilian facility and that the strikes constituted a "war crime". Centcom said the attack destroyed the ability of Ras Isa to accept fuel and that it would "begin to impact Houthi ability to not only conduct operations, but also to generate millions of dollars in revenue for their terror activities".

The deadly explosion at Iran’s largest port is believed to have been caused by missile fuel ingredients sent by China.
At least 40 people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured in the blast in Shahid Rajaei port on Saturday, which the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said was likely triggered by containers of chemicals.

DUBAI, April 28 (Reuters) - The death toll from a major explosion in Iran's most important container port of Bandar Abbas rose to at least 70, with over 1,200 injured, state media said on Monday, as firefighters battled a blaze that Iranian officials said was now under control 48 hours after the start of the fire. Saturday's blast took place in the Shahid Rajaee section of the port, Iran's biggest container hub. Efforts to put out the ensuing blaze have continued since with sporadic fires breaking out due to wind and flammable goods in the containers, some releasing toxic emissions in the area, according to state media.

NEW DELHI: It was shortly after 9am that India’s director general of military op, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, got a call on hotline from his Pakistani counterpart Maj Gen Kashif Abdullah. Abdullah sounded Ghai out on a ceasefire and, it is learned, referred to the conversation US secretary of state Marco Rubio had with Pakistan Army chief Gen Asim Munir, in a clear indication that the feelers were coming from his boss. Ghai briefed his bosses on development got no instruction from them to engage with Abdullah.
Foreign secretary Vikram Misri made no mention of the contact made by Pakistan in the media briefing he held at 10.50am, where he disclosed the losses that IAF had inflicted on Pakistan’s airbases. IAF had stepped up attacks by the time Rubio called foreign minister S Jaishankar around 11am.
In fact, IAF kept pressing on the escalation pedal after the conversation with Jaishankar where the latter, going by his post on X, appears to have maintained that "India's approach has always been measured and responsible and remains so".
If Rubio had insisted on immediate de-escalation, his pitch certainly did not have much resonance at the meeting PM Modi held with defence minister Rajnath Singh, NSA A K Doval, Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan and the three service chiefs - Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Adm Dinesh Tripathi and Air Chief Marshal AP Singh - and chiefs of IB and RAW, Tapan Deka and Ravi Sinha.
Sources said the participants were unanimous on consolidating the upper hand that India had - something that was acknowledged also by Pakistan when it reached out for ceasing hostilities.
The meeting also took into account the advantages India would have had going forward: high morale of forces, adequate firepower, comfortable fiscal situation, international sympathy the ace in form of 'blue water' Indian Navy. No wonder, when India & Pakistan reached an understanding just a couple of hours later, it came as a surprise to many who scrambled to find clues: perhaps shorthand for use of nukes, which made India relent.
