During the hearing of the Senate Standing Committee on Defense, the head of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, confirmed that the United States used the SM-3 (Standard Missile 3) weapon for the first time to defend Israel from an Iranian air attack. "Standard Missile 3" is designed to destroy enemy short- and medium-range ballistic missiles in flight.

This weapon is distinguished from other similar weapons by being able to operate outside the Earth's atmosphere (exo-atmospheric). The weapon has been tested many times over the past 20 years, but has never been used in combat. However, SM-3 was not the only "exo-atmospheric" weapon used in air combat against Iranian missiles.
